Join geologist and artist Phoebe Sleath on a guided evening walk around Greyhope Bay Centre, where we will explore the rocky coastal landscape through confident and colourful watercolour sketches. About the Workshop To start Phoebe will show you what’s in her field kit and demonstrate how you can work with watercolours in your sketchbooks to document geological features and learn more about the rocks and landscape in the process. We will talk through how to mix colours, how to control the paint and water with a waterbrush, and how to create depth. We will then use water-based pastels to add texture and movement to our paintings. On our walk we will interpret and learn about lots of different geological features; metamorphic rocks, folding and faulting and coastal erosion. This workshop is suited to nature lovers of all abilities - whether you’re a geologist, an artist, or a complete beginner. There’s is something for everyone to find a deeper connection with the coastal landscape. By the end of the walk, you should have plenty of interesting sketches and newfound knowledge to sketch and learn more wherever you go! All materials will be provided, but please dress appropriately for the weather with suitable clothing, a rucksack and footwear. A spare jacket or mat to sit on will also be useful. The walk will be short and flexible, but it is recommended to have comfortable mobility. In the event of bad weather, we will be inside the cafe for some or all of the workshop. About Phoebe Phoebe Sleath is an artist and Geology PhD student at the University of Aberdeen studying how rocks deform as faults and folds in mountain belts. During her research she has developed a personal methodology of watercolour sketching in the field, inspired by the connection between geology and creativity that Scottish geologists practiced in the 1700s and 1800s. Sketching helps us to observe better and feel a deep understanding with the landscape around us. A published Creative supported by the Scottish Mountaineering Press, the John Muir Trust, the History of Geology Group, the Geologist’s Association and the Scottish Geology Trust. Phoebe is often found up in the hills and on the rocks of Scotland with her sketchbook and watercolour palette. She is a qualified Mountain Leader and training to be a rock-climbing instructor. Phoebe is excited to share her creative perspective and love of geology and landscape with you!
