Our Mission We are committed to supporting Black women—whether trans, cis, or gender-fluid—in the theatre industry. Our goal is to provide these talented practitioners with opportunities to develop new works that resonate across continents. By facilitating 20-hour workshops in both South Africa and New York City, we aim to bridge cultural narratives and create a platform for voices that deserve to be heard. The StoryBridge Playwriting Artist Incubator is a pilot program supporting emerging Black women theatre makers—trans, cis, or gender-fluid—by providing resources, mentorship, and creative space to develop new work. Through 20-hour workshops in both South Africa and New York City, selected playwrights will collaborate with local directors and performers, refining their scripts while engaging in a cross-cultural exchange of ideas. Centering historically underrepresented voices, the incubator fosters bold storytelling that pushes artistic and social boundaries. The Project This initiative, part of our pilot season for StoryBridge Connect, focuses on the development of a new musical that will be workshopped in both New York City and South Africa. We plan to support two emerging theatre makers in this endeavor, providing them with the resources and mentorship needed to bring their creative visions to life. Additionally, we are seeking a strong local collaborator—a producer or director—to partner with us during our month-long residency in South Africa. ABOUT THE EVENT To bring this vision to life, we are raising $25,000 to fund artist stipends, workshop expenses, and travel costs. This pilot lays the groundwork for a sustainable artist development model, offering mentorship, industry connections, and a culminating staged reading to showcase participants’ work. More than just script development, the StoryBridge Playwriting Artist Incubator is a platform for transformative storytelling, shaping the future of theatre across borders. This reception welcomes artists and art lovers alike to be a part of the incremental change needed to reimagine the landscape of art activism!
