About This Event
Theatre and Dance NI have been providing captioning equipment to venues and companies across Northern Ireland since 2012. Our mission is to make theatre and live performances more accessible for everybody, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
In collaboration with Digital 4, pioneers of Theatre Captioning, we are offering two comprehensive 2-day training courses. This training is designed to empower participants with the skills needed to create professional, high-quality captioning for live events. Digital 4 has played a key role in improving theatre access for the UK’s 12 million deaf, deafened, and hard-of-hearing individuals, and their captioning technology is now used in the UK, Germany, and the USA.
Why Theatre Captioning?
Captioning converts the audio content of a live event into text and displays it on a screen or monitor. Captions not only present dialogue but also include speaker identification, sound effects, and music descriptions—enhancing the experience for audiences who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Over the course of two days, participants will gain:
An understanding of the history, purpose, and objectives of theatre captioning
Hands-on experience with Sopratext software (Captioning/Venue, Script Formatter)
Techniques for verbatim captioning and creative approaches
Practical skills in script formatting and preparation
Live captioning practice with video show relay and peer review
Insight into the future of captioning technologies
This two-day event runs from 4–5 September 2025. Full attendance on both days is required. Sessions run from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Training Outline
The training will cover:
Section 1: Captioning for Theatre – history and objectives
Section 2: Captioning Software – Sopratext tools and formatting
Section 3: Types of Captioning – open, closed, creative captioning, and caption display devices
Section 4: Script Formatting – from file creation to final import
Section 5: Script Formatting Conventions – speaker names, sound effects, intonation, pauses, and emergency screens
Section 6: Practical Exercise – creating a CAP file for a 10-minute show section
Section 7: Peer Review – feedback and improvements
Section 8: Recap and the future of captioning

Spaces are extremely limited, so early registration is strongly recommended to avoid missing out.
 Please bring along a Windows laptop so you can download the software to use during the course – please note the software does not work on Macs.

This attraction is really immersive and fun whilst being informative. Diving into the history of how the titanic right from the beginning the experience really gives you a clear idea on how people lived and worked back then. This tour is perfect for any age group and is a great way to spend a few outs of your day.

We were led by a big-bellied man, who took the middle staircase to the second floor. He asked us to introduce ourselves at the circular handrail in the middle. We were from all over the country, and most of us were foreigners. Then he led us to the parliament hall, which is where the parliamentarians usually hold meetings. There was a microphone at each seat. He then began to talk about the origin and function of this building, and spoke with great vigor. Everyone could sit anywhere, even the speaker&#39;s seat. After the introduction, he led us to visit other halls. The huge banquet hall was covered with thick and beautiful red carpet. I can&#39;t remember which hall was covered with blue carpet.

The Peace Bridge is a beautiful landscape in Belfast. It represents a very sad history and also represents the hope of the people of Northern Ireland. The walls are covered with various graffiti works, most of which are paintings expressing peace in Northern Ireland. Some of the graffiti works are very moving and worth appreciating.
