While many people typically associate Single Malt whiskies with Scotland and occasionally Ireland and Japan, Taiwan is an up-and-coming whisky-making region. Its unique tropical climate is like no other for producing whiskies. Kavalan, founded by Tien-Tsai Lee in 2005, is Taiwan's first Single Malt distillery and has been winning awards since 2010, beating out several Scotches in a blind tasting on Burns Night that year. This distillery has continued its winning streak to today!  At the International Whisky Competition 2025 alone, Kavalan was named the Distillery of the Year, Whisky of the Year, and also has the Master Distiller of the Year.  In addition, for the first time ever, two Best of the Best awards were given to separate expressions from the same distillery (Kavalan) at the Tokyo Whisky and Spirit Competition.
