DAY 1: Japanese Knife Sharpening Workshop (hands-on workshop on whetstones)
Location: Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre: Matsu Room 201
Date and Time: September 4th 6:00PM to 8:00PM
Cost: $60 (Comes with a Japanese Whetstone)
In this workshop, Eien will teach the basics of Japanese knife sharpening on water stones. Japanese knife culture is distinct in several ways: the blade is sharper and thinner, sharpening is done on whetstones, and chefs sharpen their own knives in order to accommodate their individual cutting needs. After this introduction of basic techniques, you will be able to sharpen your own knives at home and experience the true joy of cooking with a sharp blade. Please bring your kitchen knives to sharpen during the class. Space is limited so early registration is advised. Japanese whetstones and other required items are included and will be provided at the beginning of the workshop.
DAY2: Japanese Superfood 'Natto'
Location: Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre: Matsu Room 201
Date and Time: September 5th 6:00PM to 8:00PM
Cost: $20 (Lecture and Tasting)
Natto Demonstration (lecture, tasting, Q&A). Eien will talk about natto, the fascinating, delicious, and nutritious fermented soybeans from Japan. The demo will include samples of fresh natto and offer ideas for traditional and non-traditional preparations. In Japan, natto is highly regarded as a ‘superfood’ with many health benefits including cardiovascular health, brain function, bone and teeth strength, and improved digestive system. Because all natto imported into North America is frozen, this is a very rare opportunity to taste fresh, organic natto, whether you consider yourself a fan or not yet.

Standing on the top of the park, you can see downtown Burnaby and the mountains in the distance, as well as downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park and the Lions Gate Bridge. The park is rich in vegetation, and you can smell the fresh air of the pine forest while walking along the forest trails. The park is famous for the Kamui Mintara sculptures created by Japanese sculptor Nuburi Toko and his son, which symbolize the harmonious unity of humans, animals, nature and God. The sculpture group consists of 29 hand-carved logs with animal images such as brown bears, owls, salmon and killer whales engraved on them.

Deer Lake Park

If you are looking for a good place to relax around Vancouver, Deer Lake Park in Burnaby is definitely worth a visit! It is like a paradise in the city, with beautiful lakes and mountains.
There is a flat wooden boardwalk around the lake, which is perfect for walking, jogging, or enjoying nature with children and pets. The lake is sparkling, seagulls and mallards are playing in the water, and snow-capped mountains are looming in the distance. The park is free, the lawn is suitable for picnics, and kayaks can be rented on the lake. In spring, flowers are in full bloom, rhododendrons are particularly romantic, and outdoor concerts in summer are even more lively. Especially in autumn, Deer Lake is even more beautiful, and it is a great place to enjoy maple leaves around Vancouver. Parking at Deer Lake is also very convenient, highly recommended!

Central Park

Central Park in Burnaby is a free public facility built for local residents. It has a small golf course, tennis courts, a children&#39;s play area, and several kilometers of trails. The park is densely populated with trees and there are many waterfowl around two small ponds. It is a great place for walking and jogging.
