Historical Origin

The Xi&#39;an Bell Tower was first built in the 17th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1384). It was first built at the intersection of Guangji Street and Xidajie, opposite the Drum Tower. In the 10th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1582), the bell tower was moved to its current location under the supervision of the governor and imperial envoy Gong Maoxian.

Architectural Features

&bull; Overall structure: The bell tower is a brick-wood structure, divided into three parts: the base, the building, and the top of the building, with a total height of 36 meters. From the outside, it is a &quot;double-eaved three-drop water&quot; four-corner pointed wooden structure building, the roof is covered with green glazed tiles, and the building is made of wood.

&bull; Decorative details: The entire building is exquisitely decorated, with gold-painted and painted interiors, and painted beams and carved buildings. The four doors are painted red, and there are 64 exquisite wood carving stories on each door, such as &quot;Mulan Joins the Army&quot; and &quot;Chang&#39;e Flying to the Moon&quot;, etc. The carvings are beautifully composed and the craftsmanship is exquisite.
Main attractions

&bull; Jingyun Bell: Made in the second year of Jingyun (711) of Emperor Ruizong of Tang Dynasty, it was originally enshrined in Yingxiang Temple. The bell is made of bronze, weighs about 6 tons, is 247 cm high and has a diameter of 169 cm. The bell body is cast with patterns such as auspicious clouds, creepers, flying celestial beings, and soaring dragons. It has exquisite shapes and loud sound quality.
&bull; Inscriptions: There are three inscriptions on the west wall of the first floor hall of Xi&#39;an Bell Tower. One is the &quot;Song of the Eastward Migration of the Bell Tower&quot; written by Gong Maoxian, the supervisor of Shaanxi, after the bell tower moved east. One is the &quot;Reconstruction of the Xi&#39;an Bell Tower&quot; written by Zhang Kai, the governor of Shaanxi, after the major renovation in the fifth year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty. The last one is the inscription left after the Xi&#39;an Municipal People&#39;s Government renovated the bell tower in 1953.

&bull; Couplets: There is a couplet on each of the four doorposts on the second floor of the bell tower, all of which are modern works. On the north side is &quot;Eight hundred miles of Qinchuan, a place of civil and military success; five thousand years of history, a famous city in ancient and modern times&quot;, showing the historical and cultural heritage of Xi&#39;an.
