Matthew Liu Fine Arts is honored to present the solo exhibition "Parallel Metropolises" by Chinese artist Yang Yongliang. Showcases the artist's latest digital works, delving deeply into the complex relationship between modern urban civilization and the natural environment. For over two decades, Yang's work has been firmly rooted in the spiritual core of traditional Chinese ink painting, while also breaking new ground by employing modern technology. He creates reconstructed landscapes that captivate viewers with their dense layers of meaning, offering a profound contemporary visual experience. 
This exhibition marks a pivotal turning point in Yang Yongliang's creative career. Since relocating to New York in 2018, the artist has been shuttling between Shanghai and New York, observing and experiencing this Western metropolis through the unique lens of his Eastern cultural perspective. The concept of "Parallel Metropolises" not only reveals the artist's geographic span, but also symbolizes his profound reflections on cultural identity and artistic creation. This "parallel" embodies the convergence and resonance of Eastern and Western civilizations within the work, reflecting the arduous exploration of cultural translation and self-reconstruction undertaken by this Chinese artist in a foreign land. The exhibition bears witness to Yang's philosophical contemplations on individual identity, the collision of civilizations, and the expression of art within a cross-cultural context, embodying his unwavering pursuit of bridging cultural divides and facilitating spiritual communication. 
In the series of works presented in this exhibition, Yang Yongliang reconstructs the New York City landscape into a series of vividly evocative contemporary landscapes using his unique digital art language. From grand city panoramas to intimate street scenes, the artist's keen observation and meticulous creative skills capture the diverse and thriving spirit of New York, integrating it into his works. These pieces are no longer simple records of urban scenes, but rather a modern interpretation of "rhythmic vitality" (qiyun). Just as the Song dynasty painter Fan Kuan's landscapes pursued the unity of "form and spirit”, Yang's works focus on conveying the inner spiritual qualities of the city while also recreating its external forms. His creative approach inherits the artistic characteristics of traditional Chinese landscape painting, where "distant views are all mountains and water, while close-up views are all brush and ink”, while also incorporating innovative contemporary digital techniques. In the work "Phantom Metropolis”, for example, the artist employs cutting-edge digital imaging technology to reorganize the intricate details of countless Manhattan buildings into a dreamlike, mirage-like vision, evoking the classical Chinese imagery of "mirage" while also revealing the artist's philosophical contemplations on the modern city. 
Throughout the exhibition, Yang Yongliang skillfully navigates between tradition and modernity, East and West, reinterpreting the form of the modern metropolis through the aesthetic paradigm of traditional "rhythmic vitality." His works embody the essence of Chinese landscape painting while also pioneering new frontiers in contemporary digital art, reflecting the profound reflections of a Chinese artist on cultural translation and self-reconstruction in a foreign land. The Bund, located on the bank of the Huangpu River in Huangpu District, Shanghai, is the Outer Huangpu Beach, a Chinese historical and cultural district. Since 1844 (the 24th year of Emperor Daoguang&#39;s reign in the Qing Dynasty), the Bund area has been designated as a British concession, becoming a true portrayal of Shanghai&#39;s ten-mile foreign concession, and the starting point of the old Shanghai concession area and the entire modern city of Shanghai.
The Bund is 1.5 kilometers long, starting from Yan&#39;an East Road in the south and ending at Waibaidu Bridge on Suzhou River in the north. The east is the Huangpu River, and the west is the concentration of financial and foreign trade institutions in old Shanghai. After Shanghai was opened as a commercial port, foreign banks, commercial companies, associations, and newspapers began to gather here, and the Bund became the financial center of the country and even the Far East. In August 1943, the Bund returned the Shanghai International Settlement to the Wang Puppet National Government, ending the century-long concession period. In 1945, it had the official name Zhongshan East 1st Road.
The Bund is home to 52 classical revival buildings of different styles. It is known as the Bund World Architecture Expo Group. It is an important historical site and representative building in modern China and one of the landmarks of Shanghai. In November 1996, the State Council of the People&#39;s Republic of China listed it in the fourth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
In March 2018, Shanghai Bund, on the basis of comprehensively promoting the functional replacement of the &quot;first facade&quot; (i.e. the riverside buildings), simultaneously launched the functional replacement of the &quot;second facade&quot; (i.e. the Bund buildings that are not facing the river).
The Bund (Zhongshan East 1st Road) is located at 31&deg;24&prime; north latitude and 121&deg;49&prime; east longitude. It is located in the central part of Shanghai and the eastern part of Huangpu District. It faces Lujiazui across the Huangpu River to the east, is 2 kilometers away from Shanghai People&#39;s Square to the west, and is adjacent to the Suzhou River estuary to the north. The Bund runs through 9 roads from north to south: South Suzhou River Road, Beijing East Road, Dianchi Road, Nanjing East Road, Jiujiang Road, Hankou Road, Fuzhou Road, Guangdong Road, and Yan&#39;an East Road, with a total length of 1.5 kilometers.
The Bund has distinct four seasons, mild and humid, abundant rainfall, and a long frost-free period. It has a subtropical monsoon climate. The Bund has shorter spring and autumn, longer winter and summer, and more than 60% of the annual rainfall is concentrated in the flood season from May to September.
Since the concessions were seized by Britain, France and other countries in the 1840s, the Bund has become a sovereign area. Western powers operate, manage and build concessions in their own way. When commercial banks and financial enterprises have a place on the Bund, they will start to build company buildings, and most of the buildings on the Bund have been rebuilt three or more times.

In the 20th century, due to the development of architectural technology and the growth of economic strength, multi-story and high-rise buildings appeared on the Bund in various styles, such as the British classical style, British neoclassical style, British Renaissance style, Asia Building (formerly Shanghai Metallurgical Design Institute), Shanghai General Club, Pudong Development Bank Building, Qiahe Building, etc., as well as French classical style, French large residential style, Gothic style, Baroque style, modern Western style, East Indian style, eclectic style, Chinese and Western hybrid style, etc., showing the coexistence of architecture from all over the world. Therefore, this group of buildings from Suzhou River Waibaidu Bridge in the north to Jinling East Road on Zhongshan East 1st Road in the south is known as the &quot;International Architecture Expo&quot;. These buildings with coexistence of classicism and modernism have become the symbol of Shanghai.
