Pitakon, commonly known as the Thai Ghost Festival, is a colorful part of Thailand's rich ghost folklore tradition, somewhat similar to Mexico's Dia de los Muertos, or "Day of the Dead." 
Like many festivals and traditions in Thailand, Pitakon is a colorful expression of the local people's Buddhist beliefs. Legend has it that when Prince Visandhara, the second-to-last incarnation of the Buddha, returned home, the joyous occasion prompted the village spirits to emerge and join the welcoming parade. 
To commemorate this Buddhist legend, residents of Dan Sai district in Loei province don "ghost masks" and hold a grand parade. The three-day celebration is unique to Dan Sai district, but it also shares elements with other northeastern Thai festivals, such as the Ullambana Festival.
