About Phuket
Phuket is a fascinating place with an unusual history. First colonised by Europeans (Dutch, Portuguese, French and British) in the 16th century, Phuket Island was then settled by large groups of Chinese workers during tin-mining boom in the 19th century.
Combining with the local Siamese community, Baba (Peranakan) culture was born. This distinctive cultural heritage can be seen in everything from Phuket’s buildings to the cuisine.
Visitors will love the colourful mix of buildings and vibrant food, especially during Sunday Walking Street when the city centre is transformed into an open-air street food market. Go for a Thai massage or hike up to Khao Rang Viewpoint to see as far as the southeast coast of Phuket Island.
Tourist Attractions in Phuket
Old Town Phuket: Take in the colourful colonial buildings on Thalang Road, where Europe meets Asia, or dip into a museum to learn more about Phuket’s history. Don’t miss Chinpracha House, a beautifully preserved Sino-Portuguese mansion with exquisite decorative details both inside and out, including an arch-framed koi pond. Prefer to shop? Whether you’re into appraising antique Buddhas at Ranida antiques or buying sparkly dresses at Chandra boutique, there’s something for everyone in Old Town.
Phuket FantaSea: A theme park themed around Thai culture, here visitors will find cabaret performances, buffet meals, and traditional Thai performances with a different show every night. Expect beautifully dressed people and astonishing sights.
Wat Chalong Temple: The largest and most visited temple in Phuket, this site claims to hold a bone fragment from Buddha. Wat Chalong, also known as Chaitharam Temple, is of great religious and patriotic importance to Thai people as it was used as a refuge for Chinese workers during the Angyee rebellion of 1876. The pale pink and gold colour scheme of the temple complex is very Instagrammable and visitors can make an offering of fruit or incense.
