Heraklion is the capital city of the Island of Crete. It is the 5th largest city in Greece. As of 2017, it is Europe’s fastest-growing tourist destination which attracts close to 3.4 million visitors. With an 11.2% growth in international tourist footfalls, it remains one of the top 20 places in Europe as a popular tourist destination. Heraklion has a history dating as far as 3500 to 2100 BC with the ruins of the palace of Knossos, a royal retreat from the Minoan times located nearby. The current Heraklion city was founded by the Arabs in 824 and was the capital of the Emirate of Crete from 827-961. The city today is the treasure trove of historical pieces of architecture and cultural remnants from the Venetian, Ottoman era. You will be able to see the many urban sculptures, forts, moats and other dated architecture. There are nine museums which will give you a wide view of the history, art, and archeology of different times and cultures of Crete along with beautiful beaches.

Tip: Buses are the best way to get around town. But services are hard to find post 7:00 p.m.

Heraklion International Airport is also known as the Nikos Kazantzakis Airport  and is around 5 kilometres towards the east of the city. The old town of Heraklion has notable monuments like Koules which is a 16th-century fortress built by Venetians. Nearby about 5 km is the Palace of Knossos from the Minoan times. About 67 km. southwest of the city lies Matala beach which is one of the most popular beaches overlooking the Libyan Sea.

There are plenty of Cafes and restaurants in the Heraklion Old Town area which offer Greek cuisine. Dakos, Cretan salad, cheese, cheese pies, fried snails, are a few of the things which you can try while you are here.

For staying you could either choose to be in the city or one of the beach resorts on either side.
