The hosts were rude, angry and unwelcoming. We were greeted with 'You're late' no hello, introductions or sense that you are a paying guest and being welcomed into their home. We'd arrived at 18.15 when we'd said 18.00-19.00 arrival and they'd said dinner was between 18.00-19.00. At first I thought it was a skit, perhaps a flavour of Basil Fawlty but without the obvious humour. We were shocked and silent as 'He' took us to a bench, told us.. 'shoes off as we need to protect the floors' and pointed in the direction of where our 'dinner' was. But we had to go upstairs immediately to review the room, learn how to open a barn door and angle the shower head for least leakage from the shower etc. We were led past the two silent guests with eyes agog and mouths open as they witnessed this very intimidating and angry man tell us under no circumstances we were to go behind his kitchen island. That was his space and he would see to our needs, I asked if I was allowed to make a tea and was told... 'absolutely not' I should knock on his door and he would service our needs. This man did not give the impression he would be happy with our intrusion into his personal space or would welcome a request. He then took my bag, I suggested I'd be happy carrying it, but was firmly put in my place as a woman incapable of traversing the double, narrow and winding staircase to the 3rd floor. When we arrived at our rooms we were told to never roll the bags as the floor was 100years old and needed to be protected, we were told we could turn up the heating but he had set it to his preferred temperature. Then we headed down to dinner where a lovely English couple greeted us with an offer of a beer and told us the food on our plate was a curry meat burrito. My daughter is vegetarian and didn't eat any whilst I had a couple of unsavoury bites, I'd lost my appetite due to the increased anxiety I was feeling. In walks the male host and says 'Who didn't like the burrito', my daughter apologised and said she was vegetarian. 'He' replied, he makes everything vegetarian and it was vegan before he added cheese. He then proceeded to take it off the plate of scraps (I'd cleared the table) and put it on a new plate and into the fridge. Now, in comes the wife, no intro, greeting or welcoming grunt just a sharp intake of breath and an accusing tone asked, 'Who didn't eat their burrito?' My daughter apologised again and said she's a vegetarian and thought it was meat. The rebuke came on so harshly I intervened and told her to stop and said our treatment was quite unreasonable. To this time we'd been apologising for any inconvenience we had unwittingly caused and we still didn't know our hosts names or what the food was only the rules of the house (what not to do) and that we needed to stay quiet so as not to disturb our hosts! Meanwhile, the wife scraps the remaining salsa from a bowl on the table into the original jar to put into the fridge. After a pleasant evening of conve
