Montebelo Mosteiro de Alcobaça Historic Hotel

Let me say the hotel does what it says. Apart from a few minor things it's a lovely hotel. But this review is entirely based on my opinion. Hubby has wanted to stay here since it opened a year or so ago. It's 20 minutes from home. We can't normally stay away at the moment for personal reasons but a friend stepped in and covered for us as it was OHs 60th birthday. On line the place really didn't appeal to me. The hotel looked stark and empty, the rooms underwhelming. And that's how it is. I paid to upgrade to a Premier room. I still am unaware what the difference is from standard. We got some sliced fruit and a nice bottle of sparkly. For the Premier room or for hubby's birthday? We had no clue. The hotel is VAST, huge corridors. There is not one piece of artwork in the entire place. I absolutely understand they are trying to keep the integrity of the building but it's so echoey some art or furnishings would help. To avoid touching the building, toilets, showers, treatment rooms and Turkish bath (out of order) are simply pods. Which give the place a temporary feel. Niggles incude the shower flooding the bathroom and the hairdryer only works if you're under 5ft tall! For a 5* restaurant the foods was nicely cooked and nicely presented. No flair and certainly not memorable. If you stay here be aware you are within a 5 minute walk from two much better, much cheaper restaurants, Pratu's and Antonio Padeira's. Breakfast was OK. Again nothing amazing. The orange juice probably wasn't fresh, which is a travesty in Portugal. If it was it was watered down. The pool was simply gorgeous. Not deep, but really beautifully built around the original pillars. The staff are great and very attentive. We had a nice night away - it rarely happens at the moment. If you want a historic hotel slap bang in the middle of Alcobaca, you really can't go wrong. But eat out. It simply wasn't for me.

Maybe this is a hopping place in peak season but in Spring, not so much. Rooms are fine, clean comfortable. Men and women must purchase a rubber swimming cap to wear in the pools (?!). The property is spacious with good parking. Families with kids would do well here with the pools and room to roam. The restaurant and bar were never open. Breakfast is fine but a huge spread for not many guests. We came from the city to the country for peace and quiet. Now the dogs….. We were serenaded from 10pm to 4 AM by loud, dogs just next door, barking incessantly but with brief pauses that made you think they were done barking. We could not sleep. Internet was intermittent and could not seem to be fixed even though the wireless access point was right outside our room. It is a beautiful if impractical spot for tourist business and probably best suited for conferences or Spa customers. Staff was very nice, very helpful and listened attentively but did not fix the problems with the internet and reassured us that dogs are very popular in Portugal and barking day and night was expected.

Magnificent guest house 500 meters from the monastery. Very stylish place. The design is eclectic, but it doesn't spoil it. We had a bed with massive knobs and a high carved headboard as if from the XIX century and a modern room. The toilet and shower were nearby, but shared. Beautiful lobby, there is a kitchen with stove and refrigerator (not used). Breakfast is modest. The staff is friendly. There's even ping-pong. If we had stayed longer, we would have played!

Stayed here for one night while taking in the area surrounding Batalha / Alcobaça / Nazaré and found this to be the perfect place to rest our head for the night. The beds were comfortable, the design was aesthetically pleasing, the breakfast was plentiful and delicious, and the location was ideally suited to visit all three places (two of which are listed as UNESCO sites). The staff were also quite accommodating, having rectified a small issue with the wifi efficiently and with extremely grace. The only slight drawback that I can mention during our stay was that the water temperature varied quite frequently, but that can be easily forgotten once the rest of the property and its many amenities are taken into account. Highly recommended. And although we didn’t manage to have dinner on the property, we’d highly recommend Pangeia in Nazaré if you’re ever in the region; a perfect compliment to your stay.

Lovely service and breakfast in this charming boutique hotel/B&B in the town of Alcobaca. The main building is a beautifully restored old home with period furniture and touches. There is also a modern building adjacent, which is where we stayed. Our room and bathroom were both very spacious, but the layout of both was a little odd, and lacked the coziness and charm that I imagine you'll find in the old building. For instance, the bedroom had a queen rather than a king bed, and an old-fashioned ”fainting couch” which looks pretty but isn't practical. There was tons of room for a king bed and a couple really comfortable chairs. And the marble bathroom - the largest I've seen - had a spa tub that you had to climb up to, but no separate shower, though again, there was tons of room for it. Breakfast was wonderful, served in the older building, and service was awesome - very helpful suggestions for one of the best dinners we had in Portugal. Easy walking to downtown restaurants and the nearby monastery. Great location for exploring other sights like Obidos and Nazarre.

From our room View was lovely as we paid extra to have a sea view. Inez was very prompt at solving a little lightbulb issue. Overall the whole hotel is looking very shabby…..tired. The breakfast was quite basic, although there was a small amount of fresh fruit & fresh yogurt every morning, and the bread was great. Possibly just better lighting in the area where breakfast is served would be good. The member of staff who checked us in, and dealt with breakfast every morning could possibly do with a bit of guidance about working in hospitality.
