The food was excellent but it was like dining in a building site. Beautiful day and it was our Ruby anniversary, so we trekked all the way to Alfriston for lunch. A beautiful little village and the hotel looks fabulous and staff were efficient and friendly. We sat in the courtyard garden and were treated to drilling and banging throughout the lunch. We had booked the day before for the courtyard, but nobody had advised us on booking that there was work happening to the building. Such a pity especially given the pedigree of the owners that this should happen….. disappointing!

Return visit for Easter weekend, had a marvellous time. Thank you to Alex and her team. Arriving Friday we were warmly greeted by the man on reception , who checks us in to our room. We were then taken to the room by one another staff member who also offered to help with our bags. Room bright and well decorated, good bathroom. After a walk in the area we changed and then enjoyed a relaxing cocktail in the bar before sitting down to a lovely evening meal. As you would expect great service and tasty, well presented food. The included breakfast was also good on both days, with Alex serving in the restaurant on Easter Sunday taking time to wish people a happy Easter and asking about their stay. Would fully recommend this hotel and its location for a very relaxing weekend, with long walks, boutique shops and pubs.

Four of us had a very decent lunch here this week. The hotel was being blessed while we were here, which seemed slightly bizarre but interesting! The restaurant is a lovely pleasing space and the service first rate. The asparagus starter and plum & almond tart were stand-out best dishes from a quality menu - though I found my beef and stilton pie mains, which had delicious pastry, a tad dry. We chose to have coffee outside in the pleasant courtyard style garden, which sadly turned out to be a bit of a mistake because of really noisy construction work just a few metres away - unfortunate. But overall, a great lunch experience and we'll definitely return.

We enjoyed a weekend at The Star to celebrate my birthday. The staff were extremely attentive, nothing was too much trouble for them. Our room was delightful, very tastefully decorated. We had dinner in the restaurant with family and had a most enjoyable evening. As we have family in the area we will definitely return.

There is often a feeling that if a place gets so many top reviews is it worth you adding just one more? I say yes. Four of us dined at The Star for Easter Sunday and it was not over-packed. I mention this because a couple mentioned the building work going on and how this spoilt their courtyard dining experience. They could have moved inside, all they needed to do was ask. We have dined in the lounge here in the past but this time took the option of going into the restaurant area. Our roasts were a delight and followed by some superb deserts - my wife, who does not have a sweet tooth, followed her main course with another soup starter. This was intriguing for the staff but I have seen this a few times before. The service was superb and in no way did we feel rushed. Attention to detail is everything here and that is why we return so often. The style and freshness of the table decorations, even in the bar, is beautiful and you can certainly see Alex’s hallmark over it all. It made for a joyous Easter Sunday.

This historic inn is absolutely stunning. We stayed for 3 nights over last weekend as a celebration of my 60th birthday and from the moment we arrived we were looked after so beautifully. Alex and Olga Polizzi have created the most warm and wonderful environment for guests to feel special. So sympathetically renovated and extended with such attention to detail in our gorgeous, spacious and elegant room (the bedlinen was DIVINE), the dining room, library, the terrace and in the beautiful bar area where open fires were lit every day. Staff are very well trained, local and friendly and we were thrilled that Alex was also working there during our stay. She was so kind, friendly and welcoming and treated us to a glass each of champagne for my birthday which was a wonderful treat. She is very knowledgeable about all the many walks in this beautiful area of the South Downs and genuinely interested in all her guests and their experiences. We had 3 wonderful breakfasts, afternoon tea on the patio and 2 evening meals on Friday and Sunday in the restaurant, all of which were delicious and generous. Local producers are very much celebrated both in restaurant and bar. We had a wonderful tour of the local Rathfinney Wine Estate on Saturday. The whole experience we highly recommend and we will be back, hopefully next time when I won’t have a busted ankle and a broken rib and can walk without hobbling, limping and wincing! Many, many thanks to Alex and her fabulous team for such a memorable weekend. Love from Astrid & Alan PS … The only downside to Alfriston itself is the major traffic issue on the narrow high street of this gorgeous, ancient village - it clearly wasn’t created to accommodate huge 4x4s, vans and buses trying to pass each other so it is often gridlocked…

What a lovely hotel and restaurant. Beautifully appointed, spotlessly clean and the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. But WOW, the lunch prices ! £12 for a very basic, rather dry cheese & ham sandwich with a tiny bit of green salad on the side. The toasted sandwich was tastier but came in at £14, with the same bit of silly salad. At those prices we expected something pretty special, (if sandwiches can be). We didn't get it. Staggeringly poor value and we won't return. It's a shame 🤷🏼‍♂️.

This was by far the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. I would not book with these people that cannot be trusted. They cancelled my reservation with the notifying me leaving me stranded. If you have another option, I would take it again. This is the worst experience I’ve ever had.
