The hostel was perfectly located because it was waking distance to all the restaurants and shops. The front desk gave a perfect recommendation for places to eat and things to do. Would definitely go back.

This was one of the best yha we have stayed at. The room was bare but that is to be expected. The amenities, by contrast, were excellent: Two well appointed kichens with nice pans and plenty of space; A roof area and multiple living room areas; an herb garden and plenty of recycling areas; and the games and TV area looked brand new and not old and worn out . The kids enjoyed it and so did we. Highly recommended.

The room is a bit simple and there is no place to store sundries, but there are chairs and stools. The bathroom is clean and convenient, but the sound insulation is slightly poor. The shared kitchen and dining room are spacious. In the peak season, it is generally OK.

It's in a perfect location just 5 minutes from the coach stop from Geelong & Melbourne, and just behind the main street and shops while also being very quiet. There is an IGA supermarket about 2 or 3 minutes walk away from stocking up on food. It's probably the best YHA I've stayed in for a very long time, it just meets all the things you'd want while travelling, and at a great price. It has 2 main levels with very spacious kitchens and on both levels, and even a TV room with comfortable couches and free Netflix and free-to-air TV as well as a USB slot if you've brought your own movies and TV shows to watch. The BBQ is pretty decent as well, it's electric so it was as easy as turning a knob to get it started, I grabbed some sausages from a local butcher, very easy and delicious. The rooftop area was great for hanging out as well, as long as it isn't raining as it's open air. I was lucky enough to be there on Christmas Day and met the staff who were friendly and welcoming enough to put on a bit of a Christmas lunch for the travelling guests. I did not expect such a gift of kindness, they had put out a few platters of hot food and sweets as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, which was a very thoughtful Christmas surprise. The staff also sat down and chatted to guests for a while as well which was lovely. It really made me feel at home. The bathrooms were clean and well kept, the dorm rooms were fine and spacious enough, the bunk beds did move a bit but that's to be expected when they're free standing.

We stayed here for 2 nights while doing Great Ocean Road, check in was at 4pm, we got there at 3.45 called the number on the door and they gave us the code to get in and then we just sat and waited until they opened the reception, staff wasn’t very friendly, the room was awful, cold, dark and depressing, we asked to move upstairs to another room and had to pay more for that room..it was slightly better at least it had some sunlight! I don’t think the bathrooms were cleaned while we were there, the whole place just felt cold and underwhelming, it wasn’t pleasant and had no atmosphere at all, the very few pegs on the line were broken and rusty, we really didn’t like much about it at all…not somewhere I would recommend as you will be disappointed.
Response from Property: Hi Nataly, So sorry to hear you had such a poor experience. Reception does indeed open at 4pm as it states in all of the info that's sent through before you check in. If it's prearranged, we're always happy to check you in early. I sincerely apologise if this came across as unfriendly. As for the room, we do have 2 different Queen room types you can book: Standard Queen and Queen Balcony. They are basic budget accommodation rooms with shared facilities. The balcony rooms are $15 more expensive. All rooms have a small wall heater which once switched on, usually heats the room up nicely in 15 - 20 minutes. Photos have all been recently updated and picture the rooms exactly as they are. All facilities are cleaned and checked daily. If they have been left in a poor condition by another guest and it is brought to our attention, of course we are always happy to clean them again at a moment's notice. I wasn't aware of the condition of our clothes pegs so thank you for bringing that to my attention. I'll buy some new ones asap! Again, my apologies that you didn't enjoy your stay and I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip down the Great Ocean Road :) Kind regards, Dylan Property Manager Apollo Bay YHA
