Considering the Wheatsheaf had been under new management since May this year and they are still working on decorating the rooms, they have done excellent! A very friendly atmosphere, the staff were great and the food was excellent, well done to the Chef/s! The location of the Wheatsheaf being in St Thomas Square, was perfect with the Newport Minster on the square also, hearing the bells the first night we were there! With the square situated very close to the shops and the bus station, it made getting about easier! Many thanks to you all at the Wheatsheaf, you helped make our four days so much better! We will certainly come again!

Phenomenal ✨️ Came here a tad sceptical as we have never eaten here before (and we can be quite fussy 🤫) But i can not recommend enough!! Tom the chef is a credit.... cooking, serving, clearing tables and sooooo accommodating- the food was perfect 👌🏽 always made sure everything was ok, and was genuinely proud of how much we lived our food (not often you see passion anymore) We saw another tables come out and the smell, presentation ect was impressive... Then ours came out 🤯 was really impressed! Within the 1st 5 mouthfuls we knew we picked well!! Pricing is a little questionable...but all is forgotten when you taste the food 😊

The positives of this hotel are that it is a 3 min walk from the bus station, with an extensive bus network that connects Newport to the rest of the Island, so as a traveller on foot it was an easy place to explore the island from. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the breakfasts were good. The negatives were that it's just not a very nice place to stay in. The room overall was tired and a bit grotty (they are cleaned regularly but the tired look of the rooms makes it feel unclean). I stayed in a small single, the bed wasn't very comfortable, and the shower cubical and bathroom was a tight squeeze. Shower pressure was low. Wifi didn't work in the room. The other thing was the open door from the bar that leads to the rooms up the stairs, which to be fair there is a camera pointing. I had booked for 3 nights, but decided to leave a day early (partly because the weather on the island was to be bad) but I might have stayed on had the hotel been nicer. A little TLC for the rooms and proper wifi would give it a boost and make it a nicer place to stay.

We redeemed a TPIW English breakfast offer given to us as a gift. The breakfasts were hearty, well cooked and piping hot. It's a shame though that we had to fork out £6.20 for two small cups of mediocre coffee when the previous owners provided unlimited tea and coffee as part of their offer

Third visit for IOW Festival and sad to say our last..The kettle was disgusting black sludge in the bottem and could not rinse it out...on deciding to skip breakfast spoke to another couple outside there first visit and said never again..standards have slipped and I never give bad reviews..needless to say we have booked elsewhere for 2026

I woke up in the morning I couldn't have a hot drink the kettle was full of black bits. I rinsed the kettle out but still not good. We decided not to have breakfast due to cleanliness. We have stay a couple of times before however we will not be staying again

Went for a roast dinner on Sunday afternoon. I had pork and my wife had beef. Everything was cooked to perfection. There was roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli,fantastic Yorkshire pudding and cauliflower cheese with leeks in it. Very tasty indeed. The staff were attentive without being intrusive. All in all I would say excellent value, very good service and I would definitely recommend it
