Kupu Kupu Barong Villas & Tree Spa by l'Occitane Reviews

We arrived excited by the resort’s stunning jungle and rice terrace views. The welcome was warm — especially from one LaView staff who made us feel genuinely cared for. Sadly, the rest of our stay was marked by disorganisation, misrepresentation, and arrogance that completely shattered the promise of a luxury experience. 1. Disorganised Spa & False Advertising Our spa appointment, booked and confirmed months in advance by Agung, was missing from their system. Inside the Mango Tree Spa, serenity vanished — old merchandise was displayed everywhere, with only one cupboard showing real L’OCCITANE products. The place felt more like a clearance store than a sanctuary. Option of Treehouse: Overpriced & Overrated I paid for a 90-minute deep tissue massage (AUD 120) and an express Shiseido facial (AUD 90). Both were poor in quality. The products used were clearly not authentic L’OCCITANE or Shiseido. The spa was humid, had no air conditioning, and echoed with screams from river rafters and nearby villa guests. My friends’ treatments were also cut short. Comparable spas next door offered far better experiences at half the price. 2.Room & Facilities: Far From the Photos Our “basic” suite smelled musty. The reused slippers were slippery, the bathroom had mould, and water pressure was weak. Water dripped from the ceiling as we brushed our teeth. Only the lobby and driveway resembled the online photos — the rest was heavily edited and misleading. 3.Management’s Dishonesty & Defensiveness After my friend’s review, management falsely accused her of being an employee of L’OCCITANE Paris — an appalling lie meant to discredit genuine feedback. Our photos prove we were simply guests sharing real experiences. After apologising privately and asking her to delete her review, management posted a fabricated and defensive public reply when she refused. Such behaviour is manipulative, unethical, and unprofessional. 4.A Pattern of Negativity Ignored Our experience is not isolated. Many public reviews across TripAdvisor and ******* reflect the same issues-poor maintenance, false advertising, and dismissive management. These consistent complaints contradict their claim of “15 years of excellence.” Frequent travellers know that positive reviews can be solicited, while honest criticism often faces retaliation. 5.Misleading Package & Cut-Short Service The so-called “complimentary” spa treatment was part of a paid package, clearly stated to include one hour. Having the therapist end early while calling it “free” is deceptive and violates fair-trade principles. Guests deserve transparency, not manipulation. 6.Classist Remarks Most insulting was the management’s public comment that we stayed in “the most basic suite.” Every paying guest deserves respect and the right to share their experience. This remark exposes a condescending attitude that explains much of the resort’s declining reputation. Thankfully, we did not book the pricier suites, as the lack of quality and integrity was already clear. Thus,Kupu Kupu Barong hides behind the prestige of the L’OCCITANE name, yet delivers none of its promised excellence. What should have been a peaceful escape became a distressing experience of false advertising, poor maintenance, and disrespectful management. Instead of accountability, the resort chose denial, manipulation, and public defamation. A sincere apology would have been enough, but the attempt to silence honest guests only reveals deeper issues of ethics and leadership.Future guests deserve to know the truth — what you see online is not what you get.

It was an amazing due to the view (location of the hotel) being right in front of the river and the amazing service and friendliness of the staff at the hotel. They constantly checked on our food taste and quality and were ever ready with the buggy to bring us around. They responded to requests and questions very quickly too. The weather at the hotel area was also cooling and lovely toward the evenings.

Staff were very friendly and did go above and beyond. Lighting in the room could have been better as felt quite dark and dingy. I would recommend :)

A wonderful hotel close to the river and jungle, very quiet and with beautiful nature. The hotel stuff is exceptional friendly and helpful. The food is very delicious and the restaurant stuff very nice, helpful fullfilling your requests. We felt extremely welcome there. Not recommend this place. So old and low quality. Over priced too. I will not come back for sure. Sorry, but it’s true. Many beautiful place in Ubud

River side pool villa was awesome. Well curated rooms. Villa was cleaned twice. Ultimate choice for romantic holiday. Privacy can be further enhanced.

Best booking system

The location is great, the view is outstanding! The Restort is old and dated, needs renovation. Prices are litle high for what has offer now!

Nice area but that’s it that’s what you get there. Our room wasn’t ready till 5pm then we go out and come back about 2 hrs and want to have a dinner at restaurant they told us it’s fully booked and we can have a dinner after 9PM. We ask for water water and they told us the house keepers already left . We never go back there Massage was over $150 Australian Internet was terrible I don’t think we never go back there again

The hotel is rated 5 stars but it has nothing of a 5 star hotels. The room decoration was quite old with the shower window broken, night lamp partially working and big mud stain on the wall! We asked to change the room and they offered a downgrade instead of an upgrade! The Staff was gentle!

The houses are incredible, the location beautiful. Very peaceful . Perfect experience !

It is a nice place to stay! I enjoyed the food and the scenery. All the staffs are friendly and helpful. I will definitely miss my time in kupu kupu barong!

Everything was excellent. I would definitely stay here again. ■Room Our pool duplex villa, number 5, was the closest to the front desk. It had a spacious four-story atrium, was clean, and overlooked the Ayung River Valley. It was so spacious that even the two of us couldn't tell where we were. ■Amenities Everything was provided for a comfortable stay, including luxuriously scented L'Occitane body soap, bubble bath, diffusers, bathrobes, nightgowns, slippers, two insect repellent mats, wine glasses, cups, and unlimited bottled water. ■Location Enjoy the untouched natural beauty of Ubud. There are no souvenir shops nearby, but there is a free hourly shuttle bus to town, and there is a convenience store (Kmart) right across the street, as well as a large supermarket (Petio) where you can purchase alcohol. There's also a burger shop right across from the supermarket. Within a 10-minute walk (turn right after exiting the entrance), there are three currency exchange offices and several warungs. Royal Pita Maha is also about an 8-minute walk away, so you can enjoy a restaurant. It's the perfect location for a relaxing stay. ■Amenities There is a pool and L'Occitane spa facilities. There is a shop on site selling fabrics and other small items like you'd find in town, but the lobby is small and there is no gym. ■Service All the staff were extremely hospitable. From the time I made my reservation, they were courteous and polite, and when I moved to my next hotel, they took me right to the hotel by shuttle bus, which was really helpful since I was carrying a heavy suitcase. ■Meals The breakfast buffet was centered around local produce and fruit, and the salads were conveniently portioned. The selection was thoughtful and not overly generous. There was no information about afternoon service, but when I asked, I was told it was included. Even when I asked the restaurant staff, they didn't seem to understand, so perhaps it's a hidden service? ■Comments This is a hotel I'd definitely visit again. The service, facilities and location were excellent.
