Self check-in The location is good, in the center of the old city, next to the river. You can walk around the old town! The disadvantage is that there are many people in the bar at night and it is noisy.

The hotel has no front desk and there was a problem with the check-in system. I had to find many people for help and it took more than an hour to check in. The experience was very bad.

The location is excellent, close to Basel's landmark Middle Bridge. Choose a room with a view of the Rhine River and open the window to watch the passing vehicles and pedestrians on the bridge. There is also a gingerbread store next to the hotel, which is super convenient for buying souvenirs.

Wonderful room overlooking the Rhine in Basel. Excellent breakfast especially the bread and jam. Very central location for shopping and wondering around old town. Right across the river from the city hall and marketplace.

I had been in this hotel in three previous instances, alwasys in October and always for the same congress (ABIM). It had always been a nice experience, with welcoming staff, nice breakfast in its resturant, good cleaning service. This time I stayed four nights and it was horrible. The new owners have converted the hotel into a self-check-in place. this means that you do not see a soul. the reception desk has been boarded up with wooden plank. The entrance to the restaurant is closed, with a sign "Kein Durchgang". The rooms are not made up ("only if you stay a week"). In the entrance lobby and in the staircase well a sewer smell permeated the air. The "breakfast" was totally squallid, a coffe machine with stale croissants in a bare room. NEVER AGAIN!!
Response from Property: Dear Massimo, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We regret that your recent stay did not meet your expectations and that you were disappointed by the changes since your last visit. With our self-check-in system, we aim to offer our guests maximum flexibility and convenience. We regret that this was not to your liking. Additionally, instead of a traditional breakfast, we now provide a Coffee-to-Go service, which focuses on simplicity and accessibility. We regret that this did not meet your preferences. We highly appreciate your comments about the cleanliness and like to sincerely apologize for these issues. We appreciate your feedback as it helps us identify areas for improvement. Best wishes from the Merian Basel

I have rented an office for the afternoon. A very nice room with a view on the river. The fishermen room. Beautiful with good wifi. The staff was cery friendly especially the managimg director. I could work there prefectly. The tram and bus stop in the street, so you’re well connected.

The public transport is very easy to reach. The staff at the front desk was very friendly and competent. Here we may mention Ms. Geiser for her exceptional helpfulness. Thank you! The room was very quiet and well furnished; the beds were very comfortable. The breakfast buffet was delicious, rich and nicely prepared. In addition, my partner was greeted for her birthday with a charming kiss and warm wishes. The overall price-performance ratio was very good. We were extremely satisfied with the hotel. We like to come back.

If you are looking for a downgraded experience this is your place! This is no front desk staff so you get to check yourself in (and make your own keycard). There is no restaurant - it has been replaced with a coffee machine and a basket of croissants. The rooms are hot as hades and are only cleaned upon request. Good luck if you need anything from an extra towel to help requesting a cab... Be aware - many sites still advertise that this is a Sorell hotel - but it has clearly been sold and is no longer part of the Sorell group of hotels. It makes me sad as this used to be a lovely spot to stay right on the river....

Unfortunately the floor was not clean. There was a cigarette under the sofa. We were also missing a bath towel. This hotel seems to be operating at the bare minimum possible instead of genuinely wanting their guests to feel as if they received a quality experience.

Do not go here in the summer! There is no air flow in this hotel and the small rooms get very hot. It is so warm in our room that we feel as if we are in a sauna. That said, our view of the Rhein River and the city of Basel is fantastic. I also do not recommend staying here over a weekend, as there was loud music all afternoon until 10 PM. I would, however recommend a weeknight stay in the cooler seasons. The location is ideal. Rooms are very small, but comfortable. There is no front desk here, as you check in on your phone or on a screen in the lobby, so no in house help at all.

There is not a person on-site. Wi-fi drops every minute or so. Lobby is dingey, dark, smells. Carpet in rooms is threadbare. No A/C - an oscillating fan is provided. There is a free croissant in the AM. Furniture comes from a second hand brocante. International travellers should not stay here. Great location / terrible hotel.

The positive things are a nice view from the 5th floor facing the river and the room was clean and the bed comfortable but otherwise the hotel is very tired and desperately needing a refurbishment. We won’t stay there again until it is refurbished.

Oh dear! Our favourite hotel in Basel is now a shadow of its former glory. It is due for a major refit, but they keep it open with skeleton staff, reception boarded up and replaced with two checkin laptops, and the lovely breakfast deck is closed for residents. Avoid until it is refitted, unless you are desperate! Still a great location, but feels like a prison with card entry security doors.
