Beppu is a truly fascinating city, but unfortunately, I encountered several drivers who were rude and unfriendly toward foreign tourists, which left me with a bad experience. However, lovely and friendly people still make up the majority. For instance, during my stay at J-Hoppers Guesthouse, I met very friendly and sweet front desk staff—it felt like the hostel might be run by a family. When I walked into the shared kitchen in the morning, the staff greeted me warmly. They also have a super cute dog who greets guests as well (I really wanted to pet it because it was just so adorable!).
While visiting sight-seeing spots in Beppu, I got injured, and it was extremely painful. Since none of the staff at the attraction were able to help, I could only hope to get assistance from the front desk once I returned to the hostel. The staff provided me with antiseptic products and waterproof bandages—I am so grateful for how they rescued me from a helpless situation. Even though my wound still hurts, my heart feels warm.
To help other travelers, I’d also like to share some details about the facilities. I stayed in a triple room, which was very spacious, clean, and tidy, with a separate wet and dry bathroom design. The traditional tatami mat was a bit firm, but it was a unique cultural experience. Overall, I had a great stay. As a side note, I recall there were only two power outlets in the room, so if you have a lot of electronics to charge, bringing a power ***** might be a good idea!
