Do NOT be put off by the truckers cafe look on the outside. This is like going to your Mums for dinner and you are made just as welcome. I had Mince and Dumplings with Mash and Veg. Just gorgeous. If your sick of Gastro Pups taking the mick give Julie's place a go. Sunday Dinners are legendary apparently.

Arrived for Sunday lunch, staff very friendly on the bar.The guy serving the meat never spoke basically we just told him what we wanted. The carvery has plenty of choice of veg and is kept very hot. We all thought that the dinner didn’t have much taste at all. The gravy looked very nice but no taste at all. I asked if I could have a small carton so I could take our leftover meat home and was told sorry we don’t give takeout cartons. Clearly they do take out Sunday dinners. Anyway I was disappointed as it looked amazing but no taste.

This is one of the best places ever for a Sundays dinner. It's consistent and gets so busy the problem with that is they do not put the staff on to keep up. One person serving drinks you wait half hour it's that slow. Put staff on the place has plates left all over as they can't keep up. It's greed in my opinion to pay staff

We were told that we need not book a table unless the group was large. There was ample parking places at the back of the building although the snow was 10cm deep. Signs on the wall indicated the entrance for Sunday lunches. We were told we had to go past the carvery to the bar where we ordered our drinks and carvery meals. After paying we received two receipts. We took our drinks to a table then went to the carvery. A ticket for our meals was handed to the chef. A small plate was taken and the chef placed selected meat on our plate then it was self-service for vegetables etc. the restaurant was fairly full indicating it was a popular place. The meal was full of flavour. None of us asked for a dessert. We will definitely return to this hotel when we are in that locality

The accommodation was clean and the room was spacious. Toiletries are not provided other than a small bar of soap and new pillows are needed. On the plus side Staff were very warm and welcoming. Easy access from A68 and there was no disruptive road noise which was a plus

We arrived at the Brown Horse on a wet and miserable day but were greeted in such a warm way it made up for everything. We were escorted from our car to our room by a lovely lady who insisted on helping with our luggage. The room was clean and functional with a very comfortable bed and plenty of pillows. There were the usual tea and coffee making facilities. We had a little lounge area opposite the large shower room. The couch was a little low for me so we did not use this area much. The shower was powerful and the towels soft and large enough for the job in hand, We slept so well here both nights, it was so quiet. My husband ate in the restaurant and said the Chicken Goujons in a creamy sauce were the best he had ever eaten. The hotel is known best for it's Sunday lunch it is a shame we were not there to enjoy it. The owners are super friendly and run a great business I would certainly stay again if I was in the area.

We stayed here having booked last minute so got a discounted rate. We paid just under £100 for a double room and breakfast. Pretty easy to find, check in was fine and fairly standard. Room was very attractive BUT, had I paid full price I would have been raising my eyebrows at the cobwebs and the patches on the wall that looked like they may have been from a leak or dampness? The room however did not smell damp, but was fresh and overall very clean. The ensuite was lovely, with a nice shower. The bed was super comfy, with ample pillows, and plenty towels available. There was also a hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. Although I had to pull out the bedside table to get a socket to plug the kettle into which had to sit on the floor for coffee making! Again - had I paid full price I would probably have been muttering a lot more about that than I did. An extra socket would be handy! The breakfast was exceptional as it says on their booking page. Overall, I'd definitely stay again, (if I was paying the same under £100) but if they want to be charging more they should really up their game just a little, they're so close to getting it all right. Only other thing I'd say is that their outside lighting is a bit too much. If you're approaching in the dark some of the floodlights are actually blinding. We both struggled on our return in the dark - possibly some of the floods need adjusted to throw the light down a little more than out?
