We decided to break our long journey back from South Wales with a stay at The Oak Inn, and were well pleased with our choice. The pub is out of town, but right by the main road, and was busy when we arrived around 7 pm. The accommodation is in an annexe behind the pub, up an external staircase, and we were pleasantly surprised to be shown to a spacious room with a couple of additional bunk beds in an adjoining space. The proprietors were very accommodating, and we were told we could choose where we wanted to eat, so we went for a small back room which was quieter than the main restaurant. They also have an outdoor 'Tiki Bar' with piped reggae music, which could be fun on a summer's evening. My wife's wood-fired pizza was very tasty (they were happy to provide a box to take away a couple of slices), as was my chicken dish, and the breakfast was good as well. The ale from Wye Valley was well-kept, and we got the impression of a couple really making an effort during these hard times for pubs - they were advertising a shanty night and a reggae party amongst other forthcoming attractions - and I hope they continue to be well-supported. What we'd planned as a journey-breaker turned out to be a very enjoyable evening in itself. Well done!
