The George Hotel

Very disappointing visit for lunch with the family. Overcooked fish, extremely fatty lamb with what was described as roasted vegetables and bore no resemblance. Burgers nothing to applaud either. A shame as over the last 14 years we have had many lovely meals. Will not be coming back; but I guess that as the current owners have a sign up saying that they are leaving ….it really doesn’t matter!

The actual pub part of this hotel is lovely and staff friendly. Our room was extremely hot and without air con it was necessary to have the window open . This wouldn’t normally be an issue but after the bar shut the staff sat outside drinking and talking very loudly . At 12am we felt the need to make a comment. They did go in but came back out later . The bed mattress was incredibly uncomfortable - you could hear and feel the springs moving as you moved. It didn’t make for a good night sleep. The panelling in the bathroom has two panels out that need fixing. The shower pressure was extremely poor. As the room was above the kitchen we were woken by the generator (?) or extractor something similar going on around 6ish. It’s a shame as this hotel has potential especially as there aren’t many in the area.

Went for Sunday lunch , took at least 10 mins to be greeted, freezing in there so cold . Then took another 10 mins to be served at the bar . Cold atmosphere considering the prices charged, took ages to clear plates considering it was extremely quiet for a Sunday, Food ok not the best for the money, not very attentive only if you’re a local.

We haven’t previously visited The George, so we were very pleasantly surprised to find superb pub food at reasonable prices. Our lunch with friends was the launch day for a new menu, so staff were very interested to hear what we thought. Wow! Fantastic, tasty dishes from start to finish. The cured salmon and prawns starter was totally delicious. The chef has focussed the new menu on warming, hearty food for the winter season. There are still steaks, burgers, lasagne etc, but we went for beef short rib, liver & bacon and porchetta. As a bonus, the two young ladies who served us couldn’t have been more friendly and welcoming. We will definitely add this to our local favourites list - well recommended.

Thank you so much to all staff at The George, for our fantastic Christmas lunch. There was a large gang of us but the food arrived seamlessly, on time and hot. The chicken ballantine was totally delicious (that sauce!!) and the turkey roast a fine feast, with lush green vegetables and a big fat Yorkie. Yum. Puddings were fabulous and the service was unbeatable. You must have all planned and worked so hard. The room looked so special, so Christmassy and we all had a cracker! A thousand thank-yous for a memorable afternoon.

Staff were fantastic. Wayne and the team saved a tragic afternoon in Frome. After spending some time locally, this is by far the best pub. Staff were friendly and professional. Food was very good (Sunday lunch - served all day and into the evening£
