Hôtel Mercure Cherbourg Centre Port

Free adjacent private carpark, a little secure. Warm reception then to our bedroom on the 5th Floor with a view of the harbour and the city. The bedroom provided everything we needed for a one night stay. The breakfast was first class, plenty of choices including Poitine de Porc instead of Back Bacon but that appears to be the French way. Everything was kept topped up - excellent.

Very well positioned right on the river. Very clean and modern. Good sized rooms. Drinks and food very reasonable. Lovely, helpful staff. Was some outside space on a rooftop which could be made to look fantastic. Looks as though was a smoking area.

Good breakfast - interesting choices available. Restaurant area beautiful.

We loved this hotel and will definitely be back next time we are catching a ferry from Cherbourg. The rooms are spacious and bright with floor to ceiling windows giving amazing views over the fishing harbour. The breakfast is excellent and the prices in the bar and restaurant are very reasonable if you don't fancy venturing into town or if you are there on a Sunday or Monday when most other restaurants in Cherbourg are closed. The staff are all exceptionally friendly and helpful and the cleaning team are phenomenal- they keep the whole hotel absolutely spotless. The free car park directly behind the hotel is a real asset too.

It was very handy having free car parking for this hotel. We were upgraded for free to a junior suite on the 5th floor which had fantastic views over the Bassin du Commerce. It was a good base to visit Cherbourg before returning to the UK by ferry. The location was a short walk from the fantastic fish restaurant we had booked (Le Clopoing) and which we could also see from our suite. Being a large corner room, we had good floor space, an excellent shower and large bed. Our only comment would be the quirky layout of the toilet being around the corner from the bathroom and sink.

Bad design This is a brand new hotel but with a major flaw in the design: huge expanses of glass in every direction meaning that on a hot day it gets very hot inside. I can see the attraction of making the most of the views, although why it needed a scenic lift facing the rear and the most drab view of car parks and buildings is beyond me, but this is really the worst example of bad design, totally unsuited to raising temperatures. Even with the aircon on you have to close all curtains when the sun hits the windows. Otherwise a standard modern hotel. Very helpful staff, particularly at reception where they make sure they warn you about the scenic lift which might take people with vertigo by surprise.

We stayed in Cherbourg before a ferry home after a 2 week tour of Brittany. The hotel is new and clean, staff friendly and helpful. We had a large room on the 6th floor overlooking the harbour so we could see all of the comings and goings of the fishing boats. We didn't use the hotel restaurant as there were quite a few seafood restaurants along the harbour. The ferry terminal is about 5 mins drive away so it's a good stop if you're here to catch a ferry but sadly Cherbourg itself isn't worth a visit
