The Laurels of Chinchilla

Chinchilla|2.54km from city centre
We took our two dogs with us to stay in the pet friendly cabins. We have mixed feelings about the stay as it is very rustic, but also the Laurels provide a little reprieve from the highway and staying in a standard motel. This is where we struggled. Staying in the Warehouse initially, looked lovely (lovely paisley patterned walls and quilt) - but actually staying there, and having no windows in the bedroom (just the main door for air), no cupboards or drawers and a tiny kitchen bench and small bathroom top for 2 nights, for us, it was quite claustrophobic. You have to close the main door that looks over the garden, to prevent mossies and wildlife at night and keep the dogs in. Also, there were mice (an issue explained on our arrival). I don't mind mice and when I saw one outside, that was fine. However, on our final night, we stayed in the riverfront cottage, and compared to the warehouse, it felt huge!! As it was - it had a separate bathroom that was lovely, a huge kitchen bench and a king bed - but that was an odd shape as my feet touched the bottom and I am short. So changing rooms made us feel totally ripped off as we paid only $30 less a night so stay in a box room (the warehouse). Then I found a mice in the bedroom section which ran across the bed! the door handle to the bedroom fell off which I had to put back on. While the view of the river initially looked lovely, we realised there was a rusty knife and saw and old fishing stuff left there- and a shed that had fallen down by the river edge, clearly not cleared up - for a long time. While there are kayaks, you wouldn't go in the river as it was full of logs and so impossible to go anywhere. Overall I would (oddly) still recommend it as it beats staying in a standard motel, and a lovely setting in the trees and garden, but, as I mentioned, it needs attention inside and out. Also the Warehouse could be vastly improved if it was extended into the space next to it, (that is currently storage) as it is just too cramped. We were glad it was pet friendly but there is room for improvement. The hosts were lovely (owners were away).

Chinchilla Motor Inn

The best accommodation on our Outback road trip. Everything we needed - separate rooms for us and the kids, AC, a stove and oven, microwave, sink and even a washer and dryer! It's a shame we were only there one night and didn't stay longer. Would definitely go back and recommend to others.
