This was a very unfriendly place. Even tho we cleared early arrival via email Owner was surly about it. The showers are not only very difficult to operate, there is a high step in which makes it difficult to get out. And it's slippery. I didn't feel safe. Breakfast was awful. There was no choice and the food was almost inedible for our US stomachs. We never felt welcomed. The hot water wasn't available for a 2nd shower. Owner did not care.

Loved my stay at Rathan House! Ewan & Irene made every effort to make my stay enjoyable. From lovely breakfasts to tips on sightseeing, general conversation and their two beautiful dogs . A lovely place to stay with everything one might need nearby, including public transport. 10/10

The rudest host I have ever encountered. No answer when we rang the bell at 5.50pm; had to phone the guesthouse to get in as we learnt that he had been asleep. When he came out to let us in he questioned us about other vehicles parked on the driveway- how would we know who they belonged to? Once inside he threw the registration form and pen on the table towards me. He asked if we wanted breakfast and I politely said no thank you. He said ’I take that as a no then’. When I gave him the registration card back he said ’Now I know where to send the ashes when the house burns down’. Was he trying to be funny or was he in a bad mood because we woke him up? Either way I wouldn’t recommend this place.

Didn't get the chance to stay as after booking online, I later got the emailed message "Actually we have no rooms left. We are going to have to ask you to cance;l (sic)" No apology or explanation why they were taking bookings when the hotel was full.

We had delightful hosts in Ewan and Irene. The room my wife and I had was in the original part of the house where our hosts live. Thus we were greeted by their two friendly and enthusiastic dogs each time we came from or went to our room. The room was spacious and the large window had a view of their large back garden. As advertised, the breakfast was plentiful, varied, and distinctly Scottish. The two meals we had were both delicious and my wife and I had different meals from each other and different each day. If you are even a mildly adventurous eater, the “surprise” portion of the meal should be a pleasant one. There is plenty of parking off street in front of the house. The location is extremely convenient for catching a bus into Edinburgh and the train is nearby as well. It took a beat to tune into Ewan, but once we got to know him he was very helpful and full of entertaining and informative stories on many subjects including the “fourth Jacobite uprising” a.k.a. the American Revolution.

Lovely guesthouse at a very convenient location. Bus to Edinburgh just outside the driveway, Morrisons and restaurants at walking distance. Hosts were extremely helpfull and friendly, breakfasts were not standard but different every morning. The fruitsalad as a starter is a reason to come back. The room was big and comfortable with view (and access to) of the nice big garden. Good housekeeping! We will defenitely come back soon.

This place is an under-the-radar gem. Not only is it convenient to Edinburgh and the Lothians, the breakfasts were marvelous. Two blocks away from shopping and the park. I heard the Indian restaurant nearby is very good. If I am ever in the area, I hope to return for more wonderful stories. Thank you, kind hosts.

Stayed 4 days at Rathan house in the single room. It's small (which was fine) but thoughtfully and warmly furnished. The owners Ewan and Irene are a lovely couple, who are together the best of the entire reason to stay at BnBs and small family run hotels. Came back with stories for days. Breakfast was good and filling including goodly helping of seasonal fruit, which I appreciated. The bed and pillows comfortable with an electric blanket to boot in this moment as the season is just turning. The water pressure was excellent. All round good vibes. Accessible to different parts of Edinburgh/its suburbs via a few different buses. I made the unfortunate mistake of booking an early flight out but Ewan was kind enough to help me organise a taxi. My enduring thanks! Book direct on their website if you can.
