I consider myself lucky that this was a visit that meant I wasn’t in the hotel for too much time, we were there for a weekend event at the Hallmark Hotel and had stayed here last year too. The hotel has gone downhill considerably since 2019. We arrived to be told the room had been cleaned, it hadn’t so had to lug all our stuff back down to reception so that housekeeping could do their job. Thankfully a member of the reception team came to give us a hand. The room was okay, but I certainly don’t think it had had a deep clean in the last year, the dust build up above the mirror in the bathroom made my stomach turn. The sofa had rather a lot of stains on it and was very small, but at least there was one. The bed was horrendous. Everytime I turned over the whole thing moved, it was bouncier than a trampoline. When we arrived back at the hotel on the Saturday afternoon we thought it hadn’t been cleaned as there bed was still unmade, but then we realised that there were fresh towels. I have NEVER stayed in a hotel where the beds not been made. I didn’t complain because frankly I didn’t want to go back downstairs, there were a lot of young men hanging around the reception areas and in the corridors and the car park. It was actually quite unnerving walking around the hotel, I completely understand that these chaps had rooms but they gave the place a real feel of a “hostel” not a hotel. In addition the lift was so slow I took the stairs as it was quicker. I am glad I never have to stay here again.

Check-in is available at 3pm. The room and bathroom are large, but the windows are smaller than the room. The windows of other rooms in the building opposite have no view. The windows are locked and cannot be opened. I contacted the front desk and said that all the windows in the hotel cannot be opened, but because there are ventilation facilities, There was no feeling of depression during my stay. The bed was comfortable and clean. WiFi is slow. The location is close to the city center and a 30-minute walk to the train station. The service attitude of the hotel was poor. I paid in advance to stay for 3 nights. Due to an emergency at home, I only stayed for two nights. After many negotiations with the hotel, the hotel would not refund the remaining 1 night's prepaid room fee.

I recently stayed at the Pentahotel Derby for a total of 3 nights, split across 2 stays. On both occasions, I didn’t feel very welcome checking in. On the second occasion, I was allocated a room with two single beds, with an accessible bathroom. I wasn’t given the option of a double bedroom and had to go down to get this changed, as there was availability. In addition, when I first checked in, I had to leave my credit card details in case I went over my company’s meal allowance, but on the second visit, I didn’t have to – inconsistent if you ask me. The public areas (reception, restaurant, and corridors) are nicely decorated. The food in the restaurant during the evenings is good; a special shoutout to one of the female waiters. She was always bubbly, and proactive, and nothing was too much of an ask for her. It was initially a tad unclear if you ordered food at the bar, but it turned out there is table service! Keeping on the topic of food – breakfast, which was mediocre. It was very disappointing that the coffee machine was still out of order on the last morning of check-out (Tuesday wasn’t working / Friday wasn’t working). Moving on to the double room. The decoration is minimalistic, and I was satisfied with the room’s cleanliness, although my room wasn't cleaned on the second night's stay. It is probably one of the better hotel rooms to stay in, in Derby – by the limited selection of hotels in Derby, not necessarily by choice. I found the bed comfortable and the bathroom acceptable. There was blood on one of the towels, which was slightly concerning though! One thing that lets Penta down (same in Reading) is that they don’t have an iron and an iron board in their rooms. Instead, you must collect one (if there is one available) from the corridor. Not only is this very annoying, but the irons also have buttons missing, and are in urgent need of repair. I stay in a lot of hotels with work, and I found the following things irritating: Tap placement doesn’t allow great hand placement in the sink / No soft close toilet seats / No master light switch near the bed (for all lights) / On floor 2 facing the car park, loud conversations can be heard, but not clearly / Room doors don’t soft close and slam (can be heard from the bed) / Having to use a key card to access the room floor during the day was irritating / No fast check-out option / TV remote was missing backing on both occasions / TV system is clunky and a nightmare to use I rate this hotel… a bit… meh! I think the rooms are a lot better than the Jury’s Inn, and if you can deal with the general shoddiness, I’d stay here rather than at a Jurys / Premier Inn.

Hotel breakfast in general, wins at a cheap price. Very warm. An extra bed can be placed in the room. The hotel has free parking. There is a bar next door, I don’t see other things to sell,

A hotel that helps a colleague make a mistake. This family was good in all aspects of the evaluation and chose this family. The hotel's been making good comments. Nice position, too! Good recommendation!

Enjoyed the stay - had a lovely and fairly cheap (by today's standards) evening meal. Pizzas are huge - and pudding was excellent. Some guy took his meal to his room though and bunged his leftovers out in the corridor where it stayed all night (most unsightly and a bit smelly). Not Travelodges' fault though - because why didn't he take his leftovers back to the dining room! Staff were very pleasant - I would stay again - maybe for the cricket if I got a even numbered room of course!

Just back from a 2 night stay at this hotel. Arrived around 6pm on the Friday evening. Quick check-in - nice clean room on the second floor. About 5 minutes walk from Derby station. Breakfast was the usual buffet but it was topped up at regular intervals - nice and hot and set us up for the day. Would happily use again in the future.
