I’m also very sorry to be writing this review After visiting this site for the past 4 years we were extremely disappointed with what was offered. The trail has more than halved in size, no snow machine, no naughty and nice machine and no personalised Santa visit. After being extremely happy over the past 4 years unfortunately I don’t think we will now be able to return. As the review said below we went with our 10 year old trying to keep the magic alive and it was a very sad and disappointing experience.

I am sorry to say that I agree with the previous review that this year's santa visit was very poor. There was no wonderfully illuminated walk around the lakes with anticipation growing for seeing santa. No finding santas house with the photo opportunity's or the naughty/ nice machine. No personal visit with santa so the kids can have a chat and tell them what they would like. This year was a poorly decorated train carriage, a badly written story read by santa. A bag of oats, a bell, pencil and card as a gift. A 5 minute walk around a few lights, a couple of decorated shacks and back to the start. We have been visiting for several years but based of the new layout it will be our last. A real shame as we spoke to lots of people who are all saying the same, that's is gone downhill. We left feeling deflated and not at all Christmasy.

I am extremely disappointed to leave this review but feel it is important to so other families in the future do not waste their money like we have! We took our 2 children to the Santa experience, possibly the last year our son might believe so we wanted to go somewhere to try and keep the magic alive…. Having visited Fairwood lakes back in 2022 having a great experience I expected the same thing, how wrong was I! We were advised to arrive 10 mins early before our booked time (we were actually 15mins early) the email implied that if you were late you’d have to do the illuminated night trail after seeing Santa. When we arrived there was a sign that said wait here for your elf, which we did (outside in the cold) for over 20 minutes with 2 very excited children that soon got very bored waiting with no members of staff in sight! We eventually were welcomed by an “elf” and taken into the train carriage I immediately was underwhelmed as the carriage lacked warmth and the decorations were very lack lustre! The elf then revealed Santa behind a very thin curtain and I was immediately disappointed, his costume was terrible and in my son’s words “didn’t look like the real Santa”!! The “gift” they were given was merely some oats in a bag and a jingle bell… I wouldn’t describe this as a gift!! We carried on hoping that the trail would make the evening a bit better, again how wrong we were! In my previous Fairwood lake experience the trail last quite a long time, I would say a good 20 min walk, this lasted a mere 5 mins it only did a loop around the park and back to the soft play area…. Needless to say we left very underwhelmed and disappointed and with a feeling that we haven’t managed to keep the magic alive for our son!! We won’t be recommending to friends and family and definitely won’t be returning!!

Amazing place to stay and close to Longleat. Just got back from a 2 nights stay. Staff were amazing and extremely helpful, lots for the children to do and keep busy. Accommodation and site was extremely clean. We couldn’t have asked for more, thank you ☺️

The lakeside chalets are lovely - comfortable, quiet and well-equipped. This year, the Wifi in the chalets was excellent, so there must be a newly installed booster. We are always made welcome by the lovely staff members. The only issue we have is that the play area and cafe shut at 3.30pm on the Sunday, to the great disappointment of the youngsters.

We came as a large 25 people group, fishing store not stock so waste of permit. Breakfast cook extremely rude, all group wanted sandwiches with Brie as everyone wanted cheese, it was rudely refused, then we decided to take Stilton quiche that was on sale on display. The lady shouted at the sales boy and at us and said she’s not going to sell as its lunch menu. A person that does not want to serve a large group is making a disservice to the place she works in and unnecessarily ruining the breakfast for people staying in the cabins. Really bad experience. Get a breakfast from outside. They don’t want your money here.

WARNING! This campsite has a completely unnecessary bookings and cancellations policy! DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE ADDITIONAL CANCELLATION INSURANCE This campsite advises bookings to pay an additional 'cancellation insurance' fee upon booking (small print attached to the booking states that all booking are non refundable). However this 'cancellation insurance' is provided by a third party and therefore not fufilled by the site - and Fairwood Lakes will not refund any monies unless you make a claim via the insurance company and submit a long list of documentation - including in our case - a medical certificate to prove illness. We booked a pitch on the campsite for our family for a weekend, 9 days before our planned visit I became unwell, and that with my husband having to travel for work we decided that we would need to cancel. We figured as we had paid the cancellation insurance and it was more than 7 days prior to our booking (in our experience of campsites or other UK holiday accomodation this is the norm) the campsite would refund us and we could rebook at a later date. Surely this is the reason people pay the cancellation insurance - as a back up should a member of the family become unwell or have to change their plans. However upon cancelling our booking we were sent a link to 'claim our refund' - at which point it became clear that this campsite unlike all other places we have stayed at (or cancelled!) the cancellation insurance was pointless - the insurance company require a long list of documentation in order to 'process' the claim, including in our case a medical certificate to do so. This is the first time I have ever encounted a campsite (or other short stay UK holiday accomodation) the staff refuse to refund us and as I do not have the acceptable documentation I have no choice but to try to make the claim without it - I am told this may result in nothing - so a waste of my time and energy. The insurance apparently does not cover work or school commitments either! I feel very sorry for any unsuspecting families who may book here and not realise this sneaky approach and can only believe it is a money grabbing exercise. I understand the policy is due to there being lodges on the site also - but even so this seems very unecessary - especially for a camping pitch!! CANCELLATION INSURANCE IS POINTLESS UNLESS YOU ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE MULTIPLE DOCUMENTS TO PROVE YOUR REASON FOR CANCELLATION - AND DOES NOT INCLUDE WORK COMMITMENTS!!

The accommodation and site is lovely. Unfortunately the cafe has limited opening times and we were asked for our glasses back at 5pm when we were still drinking our wine and beer! Also the 10% discounts didn’t work for cheddar gorge. Most staff are friendly and helpful but one or two didn’t seem all that interested.

This was a tough one to review because it was a horrible start to what should be a magical experience for the kids but Santa and the Elf at the grotto were fantastic along with the effort from all those who put the displays together. On arrival (30 mins early as requested online) we were told by a rude lady at the café to come back in 20 mins because 'other people arrived VERY late this morning so everything is running late' Why would you say that? I would have been more accepting if Santa was running late but you telling me that you have allowed people who are VERY late to participate as normal and cause disruption to everyone else is not fair. The late people should have been taken straight to Santa initially to avoid delay and then told they could do the 12 doors at their own pace after if they cannot manage decent timekeeping! Lots of other people in the same situation as us, soft play was rammed with families delayed and waiting. After 20 mins we went back to the café be told 'come back in another 20 mins'! Not wanting to spend all day waiting I asked if we could make a start and she finally agreed. That is where the disappointment ended for us because the 12 doors experience was really good, kids loved finding the doors and it created a nice opportunity for learning numbers/letters along the way. On arrival at the Grotto (only one other family in there waiting, so not sure why they were holding so many people back at the café!) A lovely Elf greeted us and told us to look around, all the rooms had photo opportunities, interactive things, videos and chalk walls. the Elf scanner was good fun and before we knew it we were next to see Santa. Santa was Amazing, we didn't feel rushed and he was happy for us to take photos, He spent lots of time talking to us and he explained about decorating one of the gifts and putting it out Christmas Eve so he could find the house. lots of other fun things in the gift box and after finding all 12 doors kids get a free hot chocolate. it's small (Espresso size) but enough for small children. Overall it was more good than bad and would consider it again next year but needs better management to avoid unnecessary delays.
