We chose this hotel for its proximity to the Los Quetzales National Park and finally we stayed in the magnificent valley of San Gerardo de Dota, which hosts quetzals a year thanks to the presence of Guatemalan lawyers - whose fruits they eat. The hotel's area includes a garden designed for the many colibris, a variety of walkways, some of which are particularly attractive to ornithologs, and a mirador with a magnificent view of the valley. We savored our time at Santa Juana Lodge. Perched high in the cloud forest with spectacular views, this beautiful place is rich in birdlife and natural wonders. Our wood paneled casita wa lovely, very comfortable and well furnished, with wide doors opening to a high terrace, where we took in amazing views and relaxed in rocking chairs and hammock. An early morning birding tour with our expert guide Allan was an immersive experience in the plentiful bird population of Santa Juana. We hiked to a closeby waterfall and pool, entered the garden-filled path of ”silencio” and walked other trails with vast views of the cloud forest. The rough road trip up to our destination was well worth the trip. One of the most meaningful memories of our stay at Santa Juana is of the wonderfully warm and caring staff. Allan and his family, Andreas, and every person we spoke with, were kind and generous, sharing their knowledge and their love of this place. We found every meal at the tiptop lodge to be delicious, we loved the fresh juices and Julia's rice pudding dessert!
