This is an overly expensive hotel but it did not live up to our expectations. The first room we were given was dark and dingy overlooking the car park. The rooms are accessed by a very narrow dark corridor. I understand it is an old building but when you have to climb over laundry trolleys it is not acceptable. I asked for a change of room and we were charged an extra £80 for what turned out to be a very poorly decorated/finished room also overlooking the car park. We had no privacy at all, the air conditioning was a portable unit which was noisy but better than nothing. In our opinion the refurbishment of this hotel was completed by amateur trades people. The finishings were very poor and the furniture and fittings were average to poor quality with the cheapest possible fridge, hairdryer and kettle. This was our fourth hotel in the Esbjerg area during our week long visit and it was definitely the most expensive but also the most disappointing. There is no staff who help with luggage or at least there was no offer from anyone to help very elderly guests who had difficulty walking never mind hauling their luggage. The breakfast buffet was slightly better than average but the breakfast staff had to be told to clear the tables which made the experience very awkward for them and for us. I would not recommend this hotel which is a pity as it is ideally placed and has two pretty good restaurants. The bar staff were extremely accommodating when I asked for an ice bucket. The receptionist on being told that the room we were allocated was not suitable and that I was shocked at how poor/dull and dark it was, as previously described she clearly wasn't interested and stated that no one else had every complained about the room!!! Clearly she was not prepared to acknowledge that someone in the car park looking into your room which meant you had to draw the curtains (of a room that was extremely dark anyway) to get any privacy was acceptable and that I was the only guest who had complained - not a good start. I have to say that it is obvious that this hotel has very good reviews and that most guests have not had the same experience as my husband and I had and to that end I have to accept that I must be very a very discerning guest who doesn't like being ripped off for what is in my opinion a very poor experience. I would like to add that we have travelled all over the world and stayed in numerous hotels and as such are very experienced travellers.
