Pestana Village Garden Hotel

Looks lovely in pictures but in reality a dated unloved place. Centrally located but many steps and undulating pathways. Views are wonderful. Solemn staff. Expensive bars Unheated pool Gardens in need of a desperate tidy up and arborist !

Stayed for six nights in November 2023. Enjoyed my time very much. The extensive grounds really were a lovely tropical lush garden. My room was located on the -1 level. It was very quiet and the bed was comfortable. I booked a half board stay which entitled me to breakfast and a choice between lunch and dinner. Choosing dinner, I also had a choice between a daily themed buffet and three restaurants in the complex. Travelling alone, I decided to indulge in the nightly buffet. A few of the nights were better than others but overall I give the food a 7 out of 10. Desserts were minimal but adequate. Location was excellent. It was about a 25 minute easy walk to the centre of Funchal. Onsite there were two outdoor and one indoor swimming pools. I found the water temperature in the indoor pool quite cold and since it was only 23c, I didn't partake of the outdoor pools. I would certainly recommend a stay at the Pestana Village.

Beautifully clean hotel and lush grounds. We took the half board option and the food was very good. Room was spacious and well appointed. I like how the hotel did a review of our stay after a few days and asked how they could improve (I suggested that tea, coffee, milk would be useful- within a few hours we had 2 boxes of milk and lots of tea, coffee and sugar. Very friendly and helpful staff. I had a bad knee so used taxis to get into town (€5-6) but walkable if I had been fit. I especially liked the breakfast terrace.

Loved this hotel. The Staff were excellent, especially Fabio and Jaoe Paulo on Reception and Manuel in the bar by the pool. The food was plentiful and good The bed was so comfortable too The gardens are excellent and a pleasure to walk around, very peaceful and relaxing

The hotel facilities were excellent. The hotel was well placed in Funchal and itwas easy to get into the centre. The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful. Our only negative comment is that bedroom, whilst kept very clean and tidy, really needed refreshing and updating.

We returned again to Pestana Village for a lovely stay. The resort is incredibly well kept with gorgeous gardens and a non stop team of workers around the place. They have increased all their sustainability initiatives since our last visit all to the good. The staff are all lovely happy smiley and willing to help at all times. A really great place to base yourself when you are in Madeira. We will return

The hotel is very nice, it is clean, rooms are spacious with necessary amenities. It is in a great location with a bus stop outside on the street and 20/25 minute walk into town. The views from our balcony over the gardens was beautiful. In February it was very quiet and peaceful. The majority of visitors were seniors with some couples and families. We went on a half board basis with buffet dining and the option to book into the alla carte restaurant. We were only able to book once as our choice was full and one restaurant wasn't open the whole week. The buffet food was OK, as expected. The staff were on the whole friendly and helpful. The bar man was a bit if a diva, he had a complete melt down on our last night as he had no support. There are plenty of restaurants and places to drink. Places further out where the locals eat and drink were fantastic, friendly and brilliant priced. Touristy places were good and priced for tourists but not ridiculous. We got a taxi from Câmara de lobos on 2 days that we walked there. It cost 13 and 16 euros which we thought was reasonable. There is no sandy beach, you can swim in the sea if visiting the Lido's. Be warned, bring your comfiest walking shoes, streets are mostly cobbles and it is very very steep. We didn't use the buses, although there seemed to be plenty of them. It's a lovely place for a holiday. The greenery is gorgeous, one of my favourite days was walking the levada, the views were fantastic, if you are not worried about heights. The 2 cable cars are fun and worth doing, but check the port news for when there are no cruise ships, otherwise the queues are ridiculous. We did the famous wicker toboggan ride that can be found in Monte at the top of the cable car. It cost us (a couple) 35 euros and it was great fun. There are plenty if tours available that I think seemed quite reasonable, but we didn't partake.

This hotel is set in beautiful garden grounds, and is in an ideal spot for sightseeing. The local bus service is very good - about 3 buses an hour, and stops are close to the hotel. /the place is spotless, rooms are large and comfortable, if in need of an upgrade. theres no air conditioning and i wonder what it woudl be like in the summer. Unfortuntely the food is poor. Little things would make some difference - ie heated plates, keeping food hot in the metal serving dishes - ie scrambled eggs were cold. However, the evening meals were unappetising - meat was tough, a barbecue of pork was bones only, and vegetables over cooked. We ate in local resturants instead after giving the hotel restaurant 3 tries. Very disappointing as food is a big part of a holiday. Staff are great - very helpful with booking trips and general information. A lovely hotel, but could do better.
