Overall, the room at Ascott Penang was spacious, and the bathroom was also very large. The view was beautiful, and the location is excellent — right next to Gurney Bay and connected to Gurney Walk. It’s very convenient to find breakfast, restaurants, massage and hair salons nearby.
However, there were quite a few areas that I felt could be improved.
The bed was surprisingly small, especially considering how spacious the room was. More importantly, I was disappointed with the facilities and service.
The room telephone was not working when I tried to contact Room Service. I then Googled the hotel’s phone number and called using my mobile phone, but no one answered even after several attempts. I also contacted the hotel via WhatsApp, but the only available contact was the Dining department, and I only received a reply the next day. For a hotel of this standard, I feel that the facilities and service response should be improved.
I was also not very impressed with the front desk service. During check-in, I went to the middle counter, but the staff asked me to go to another counter. When I went there, I noticed the staff member rolled her eyes, which I personally found quite unprofessional. Overall, the front desk staff did not seem very welcoming or enthusiastic, and the service attitude could definitely be improved.
I think Ascott Penang has a lot of potential because the room size, view and location are all great. However, the facilities, communication channels and staff service training need more attention to match the standard expected from the hotel.
