When we first arrived at the hotel we were greeted warmly and given checked in fairly quickly. I had chosen a “cosy double room” didn’t realise quite how cosy this room would be. The bed was smaller than a regular double bed and the bathroom was pretty small too. There was plenty of parking in front and behind the main hotel building. Our room was in the courtyard which was separate from the main hotel building. The courtyard is not well signposted and we were quite confused trying to find our room initially, we had to ask a cleaner for directions. Other than being small the room itself was fine. The bed was fairly comfy and there were spare pillows in the small cupboard. The room had tea/ coffee making facilities and a tv with multiple channels. The walls were pretty thin so we could hear everything the people next to us were saying so bare that in mind. The bathroom appeared clean at first but upon further inspection the shower had spilled soap/ shampoo on the floor from the previous people that stayed there. Next to the hotel is the woodshed. The Woodshed was cosy, clean and served a variety of different snacks and drinks. Amy who works there was very friendly and welcoming and showed good knowledge of the surrounding areas. It also had popular music playing and a pool table. Dogs were welcome in this area. There was a real fireplace in here however this wasn’t lit when we visited.

The hotel is definitely not a 4 star. Top range 3 star at best. The room was clean. It was advertised as a king sized bed, however putting 2 single beds together is very misleading. The Italian restaurant, the staff are nice but the service is very very slow. Took me an hour to get food. The location is ideal. The sports centre is good and spacious. The pool is good fun. The gym needs a complete modernisation program. Not enough equipment and in a very small room. The sports centre could utiltse space more effectively and have a state of the art gym in the other bigger rooms. It would be used well, however this is sadly not the case. I will return and use this hotel in the future. The price is not cheep and if your expecting Hilton quality then this is not the hotel for you.

We recently stayed at the Macdonald Highland Hotel for two nights (checking in on Fri-30-Aug and checking out on Sun-01-Sept; room 2202 a “deluxe double” room). This trip was a special occasion for us as we were enjoying some quality time as a family of three before welcoming our second child — I’m currently 8 months pregnant. When booking, I mentioned my pregnancy and requested a “popular” room to contribute in making this special. (Despite the resort being like a ghost town, the room we were in was not just basic but subpar). While we rate it 10/10 for children with the array of facilities offered (and is the only reason we hope to return next year), I must express our disappointment with the quality of sleep we experienced during our stay. Being 8 months pregnant, sleep is already challenging, and unfortunately, the bed in our room was atrocious. The mattress was severely sunken in the centre, which exacerbated my existing pelvic girdle pain and left me in significant discomfort. The mattress was too hard, the sheets were torn and it has to be said, it was sadly the most uncomfortable bed I’ve slept in. As a result, I only managed about 4 hours of sleep the entire stay, and on the second night, my partner even ended up sleeping on the floor. Certainly not worth the £408 we paid for our stay — we expected much better. The general feel of the place is tired and in need of refreshing - particularly the rooms. There was mould around the bath / shower, the TV is Freeview with no channel guide and the sound wasn’t working on half of them … Not that we go to hotel’s to watch TV however, it’s nice to put on while family are getting ready / in the evening. I would have shared this feedback upon check-out, but since we were not asked about our experience, I felt it more appropriate to communicate this via a review. On a positive note, our daughter, despite a disturbed sleep the second night, had an enjoyable time. Like I said, the facilities for children were fabulous. We hope that if we return next year, we’ll be able to enjoy a more restful stay!

We have recently returned from our family hogmany stay. Overall we did enjoy our stay as it’s family time, however there were a few things completely unorganised and communicated poorly. Firstly I had to go into various places to find where we were actually staying as it was not communicated that there were 4 hotels to this resort. No signs posts to tell you where anything was, and when it fell dark there is very little lighting around. Our hotel room was average, and I had to ask for a travel cot even though our booking says it has an infant. The travel for was dumped in our room not put up or made up. There was no working lift, with a 20month old this was quite difficult especially at night when she was asleep and had to be lifted and carried up 3 flights of stairs. The bar only seemed to be open once for our whole stay, with only drinks available and no food. It would also have been helpful with some sort of welcome/information pack to tell us what was on and where etc. We were relying on the website/emails to tell give us any information which we didn’t like. The breakfast provided was average and very limited. The coffee provided was instant and bitter! We loved the panto and the entertainment staff throughout the stay were great! They all did a fantastic job and worked extremely hard, credit to them. Hogmany ball was a huge let down. The hall was not big enough for the amount of people that were in it. The kids had to queue along the dance floor which meant any entertainment that was on was spoilt by that. We were sent an email with an Itinerary of that evening with the evening meal which was wrong. The meal was the biggest fail, our table doesn’t eat fish and the vegetarian option did not appeal to any of us. We also couldn’t eat the meat as it was pink and could hardly cut it! After paying for a meal we were all looking forward to, to only being able to eat one course and then some cheese we were left hungry. The kids had to wait well over 2 hours before they got their dessert, again having to queue across the dance floor. There wasn’t any kids entertainment's according to the email we received either. We did complain about the meal on the night and were told there was nothing they could do about it. We had a bread roll on our table so a soup option would have been a better option. There were a lot of unhappy tables during that night because of the meal and lack of communication. We did have a great meal at the two restaurants on site. Even though Aspects tried serving our toddler raw sausages (thankfully I was cutting them before eating) Again, it was not communicated beforehand that we would have a set menu at both restaurants with very limited options. Other than the restaurants there isn’t really anywhere you can have something to eat during the day. There is a coffee/cafe type food area that is open limited hours meaning it was really busy and it was quite expensive. Before we arrived to our stay we were thinking of making
