Hotel Lion d'Or

Hotel hygiene in Europe seems pretty consistent across the board. The carpets weren't great, but the tabletops and bathroom were fine. The room was tiny, but it's super, super convenient being right next to the train station. I could literally dash to the platform in 3 minutes and not miss a beat. The front desk wasn't particularly warm, but I was out early and back late every day, so I didn't really need to communicate with them much. The view from the window was lovely, and there are even chairs outside the hotel where you can sit and just enjoy watching the train station – it's quite beautiful.

A prime hotel, very conveniently located near the train station and city center, making it easy to explore Haarlem's city center and, for example, take a long walk in the Kennemerduinen. A few points to note: the weak shower pressure. It all looks very nice, but the pressure is really too soft. You should be able to adjust it to hard and soft, but even on the hardest setting, it was still too weak. Also, attention should be given to the slightly too soft mattresses. For someone with a weak back, this is not ideal. Perhaps offer medium-firm and firm options... something for everyone. Nice and good breakfast with a great selection in a cozy lounge, good service. Friendly staff! It was a bit odd that the communication regarding, for example, drinks to be paid upon checkout from the hotel wasn't clear. Ultimately, we didn't have to pay for it because the bill was "closed," but that's strange, especially since we ourselves pointed out that we still had something to settle and what exactly it was. Because the bill was closed, we didn't have to pay for it... A nice gesture, but... it does a disservice to the hotel itself. Overall impression: a very pleasant-looking hotel, though with a somewhat rickety elevator. That also needs some attention. If I were to go to Haarlem again, this hotel is definitely one I would return to, despite the points mentioned.

Right next to the train station, which is super convenient for transport. However, the room is quite small; there's barely enough space to open an international-sized suitcase flat.

My sister and her partner stayed at the hotel on December 13th and 14th as a gift. The hotel is in a fantastic location, and it's great that they have parking where you can reserve a spot, even though I find the price for it quite expensive for a hotel guest. The room was clean and perfectly fine for a weekend in Haarlem. What was really disappointing was that the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night, and there was no clear communication about what was happening, nor was there anyone to conduct a check. When checking out the next day, nothing more was said about it... whereas I would have considered it quite normal to at least receive an apology for the inconvenience. They were already asleep and were certainly in uncertainty for about an hour. This was quite a contrast to the email and phone contact I had with the front desk beforehand, which I found to be very pleasant.
