Feeling absolutely fantastic! I booked this ryokan with a bit of hesitation because I'd seen a negative review concerning the food. However, upon checking in, I immediately realized that the hotel was completely misunderstood and undeserving of such criticism. Every single aspect of our stay was utterly flawless. The staff, in particular, were incredibly kind, warm, and wonderful. Please, promise me this: let's all, as fellow travelers, truly cherish and support this unique place. It's genuinely unlike any other, and it truly deserves our profound appreciation. I simply *must* speak up for this inn: Originally the villa of the Iwasaki family (of Mitsubishi Zaibatsu fame), built in 1929, it transformed into a hot spring ryokan in 1949 and boasts nearly a century of rich history. The Showa Emperor and Empress once resided here, and historical figures like Sun Yat-sen and Liang Qichao also had brief stays. Stepping inside, my mind constantly conjured images of these textbook personalities, creating an incredibly surreal and awe-inspiring sensation. The scenery here is so breathtaking that photos taken with a phone could easily pass for professional online images. The weather was pleasant, with the constant hum of cicadas and a gentle breeze. As I explored the entire forested area, I noticed meticulous details everywhere, clearly demonstrating the thoughtful maintenance and preservation. A quintessential Japanese ryokan. Despite its close proximity to Gora Station, it offers a tranquil escape, tucked away in a lush, verdant Japanese garden – truly living up to its name, 'Huancui' (meaning 'surrounded by greenery'). The service was simply impeccable, and the included traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast were superb. The quality of the onsen (hot springs) was also excellent.

Great atmosphere, took a room with a private spring. There is an open-air bath in the garden. Dinner and breakfast are amazing! Incredible experience.

We had a very comfortable stay. The hotel itself is an attraction; you could easily spend a whole day exploring its grounds. The staff were super friendly. We'd definitely come back again.

This is a Showa-era hot spring hotel, rustic yet quite clean. The staff were very welcoming, and the open-air hot spring was lovely. The meal included two meals per night; the food was just average. The main reason to come was to experience the Japanese garden. I slept very well that night, listening to the rustling of leaves in the wind mixed with raindrops – this white noise instantly transported me back to my childhood. I'd definitely come again sometime. The weekend price was great, and everything else was excellent.

The food is OK, the accommodation is not big, the facilities are too old, there is nothing worth taking photos of, the public bathing area is too small both indoors and outdoors, it is very close to Gora Station and can be reached on foot

The location is very good, just a few minutes walk from Gora Station. The building is old-fashioned, and the back garden is very beautiful, worth spending time to visit. The old man and the girl who were in charge of reception on the day were very warm and thoughtful. The breakfast and dinner portions were OK, but except for some dishes, they were not very appetizing.

Special reminder, no reservation is required for the open-air hot spring, but there is no bathing and washing inside. It is recommended to wash in the room before going. Of course, there are private baths in the room, so students with tattoos don’t have to worry. The food is good, very rich and beautiful, and there are almost no thunder items. However, the hotel does not provide free toothbrushes. You can buy them at the hotel if you need them, 100yan. You can visit the parks and art galleries near Gora Station, and then take the cable car to Lake Ashi.
