Somerset West Point Hanoi

Hanoi|0.41km from Bloom Microventures
My wife and I were fortunate enough to stay at the Somerset Westpoint for about 3 months in 2021, waiting for the permanent house we had found to be available for us to move in with all our furniture. We got a furnished 2-bedroom apartment on a high floor, with an amazing view overlooking West Lake. Beautiful place, modern and stylish, all the furniture and appliances were just in perfect condition. The outdoor swimming pool (probably around 25m long) is wonderful and never crowded so you can actually swim for your daily exercise if that is part of your routine. They also have a great gym and a virtual golf practice that seems to be state of the art technology (but we never used it). So the place itself is amazing, modern and charming, pristine clean, and greatly located in Tay Ho. But even more outstanding maybe is how nice everyone has been there with us during our stay. From the housekeeping to the front desk staff and the management, everyone has just been wonderful to us (and I am not saying that just because we got a totally unexpected special chocolate treat on Bastille Day – we are French…) Impossible to mention everybody here but we would like to give special mentions to the ones that we remember the name of and that we had a special relationship with: our dedicated and meticulous housekeeper, Hoang Diu, who took such good care of our home during these three months; Kylie Quynh who was able to locate for us the manufacturer of some of the furniture at Somerset that we wanted to get for ourselves, Mr Mitchell, always so nice and pleasant, and of course Miss Minna, always smiling, who made me feel at home with her great French speaking abilities and who gave us as a souvenir an orchid from her garden that is now in ours. Also, I would like to mention someone that we have never met in person but that we exchanged a lot on WhatsApp with, Miss Doan Thanh Huyen, customer representative, who helped us with the logistic of moving in and out, and who has proven herself to be an amazing incarnation of “customer satisfaction first”. We have travelled a lot, in many different countries, and I have to say that this place really stands out. Big thanks to all the team for making us feel so comfortable and wishing you all the success that you deserve!

Sheraton Hanoi Hotel

Stayed on two short occasions while in the area and gave it an average but I feel it's almost below that. I will start with the positives. The staff are very friendly and helpful and housekeeping was good. The breakfast in the main dining room had quite a good selection and very good service. Unfortunately the rest of the property left me underwhelmed, and especially for the very high rates (well over $250 per night CAD). Location is ok, but not in the 'Old Quarter', which means that many tour shuttles will not do pick ups from there. I could not even get a Grab car at 7 a.m. on regular weekday morning and forced to take a taxi or be late and miss my tour. There are however some good restaurants near the hotel within walking distance. The Club lounge has garnered high reviews here on TA and I am astonished as to why. This actually was one of the benefits that had convinced me to exercise my Marriott BonVoy status and splurge on this property rather than stay at one of the many more reasonably priced and far more central hotels in the area. I am not sure what people's standards are but this lounge was not premium at all. The food was frankly, atrocious. There is a large variety of condiments and toppings for things but the main and side dishes look like they were leftovers from a banquet event, sitting under warming lamps for far too long, dry or oversauced, and not appealing. No vegetables except for a couple of sad looking salad items, very little for vegetarian or non red meat eaters and very little Vietnamese selections, rather sad looking attempts at Western items. Desserts sat in a fridge looking equally sad and drink selection was minimal, with a long wait for a simple highball and the mix added in when it was asked for on the side. The staff was pleasant enough so I didn't have the heart to complain at the time. The worst part about it is that it is overrun with loud families and children, which does not correspond to an adult executive lounge atmosphere in the evening during a cocktail hour. On the two occasions I went in I did not enjoy my time there and stayed only long enough to finish a drink and I had to skip dinner entirely the first time as the food was so unappealing. The lounge is also located on a floor with club level rooms and the noise generated from carts wheeling in and out during early morning and late night set up/break downs, as well as the doors slamming from the same is also not conducive to an elite member experience. The other issue I had was with the bedding. The feather pillows become literally flat as pancakes when you press down and must be ten years old. I had to request firm pillows to be sent up. I also had to request a top sheet to place under the duvet as the duvet cover is made of a cheap polyester fake satin type material which is not breathable and causes excessive sweating. I am not sure why they are not using better quality fabric to begin with but top sheets are generally standard also. Curiously

Quang Ba Trade Union Hotel

To be blunt I would just recommend to people not to stay at this hotel It has good views and large rooms but that's about it. The main problem is that they have absolutely no idea how to run a hotel. Firstly, the front reception asked for our passports but then said they would keep them until we checked out. Given this was our last night of a more than 2 week stay and the 6th hotel we stayed at, we knew that this ”requirement” was nonsense. They trained given for wanting the passports became more and more ludicrous. In a nutshell we quite rightly refused to hand them over. The front desk person made it clear that guests were highly likely to be bad people, run away without paying and stealing/damaging everything in the room. The rooms were poorly laid out with no care at all. A PowerPoint in the wall that was covered by furniture was accessed by then cutting a hole directly on the furniture! The buffet breakfast was arguably the biggest joke. It looked like a couple of 6 year old saw a picture of a buffet once and tried to replicate it. The selection was extremely poor. The bread selection was a few slices of plain white bread, an unopened jar of jam and no butter. Other than that there was one choice of a cut up sausage and a couple of slices of plain cheese. Totally miserable presentation and to be honest they should be adhered to even pretend that was acceptable. For whatever reason this hotel is sub standard so exercise your choice and go to many other places , just not this one.

I have used WhatsApp to contact the B&B in China. The B&B owner told me that check-in requires a phone call. The cafe on the first floor is not open, so I am not sure if there is someone available to check in directly on site. The most satisfying thing about the B&B is that there is a washing machine and dryer. I also like the style of the washing machine and decoration, but I feel that the B&B is very casual in terms of cleaning. You can see hairs left by others everywhere, and the quilt cover is very wrinkled. In addition, there is garbage left by the previous tenant under the sink. The hair dryer is used The old hotel wall-mounted type, where you have to press the power button all the time, but it's not fixed, which is very confusing.

The location of the hotel is relatively remote and has to go down a small slope, but the hotel room is very large. It is a hotel apartment type with one bedroom and one living room. It is very clean, quiet and very cost-effective.

Breakfast is not available until nine o'clock, there are not many types, but also many. There are rice noodles, porridge, toast, pickles, peanuts, fried rice, steamed buns, eggs, vegetables, and fruits. I had porridge, pickles, rice noodles. No extra beds should be possible. The road around the lake is around. There is a simple playground nearby. When you see a yellow-haired girl swinging on a swing, children can play. There is a parking lot at the entrance and you can park. However, the hotel is relatively old and needs special consideration. The room hygiene is not very good.
Musketeers Guest House

This is a great, family-run, guesthouse - it's an oasis in busy Hanoi. The staff are very welcoming and speak English. There's a bar area and comfortable seating downstairs - air-conditioned of course. The rooms range from well designed dorm rooms to individual rooms including the large double room I stayed in with a little balcony. The room has air-con, and an air-purifier, and it's cleaned daily. There's a shared bathroom, which wasn't a problem. It's cleaned regularly. It's only shared with 2 other rooms on that floor. The beds are very comfortable and clean. There's a chilled water dispenser, and great fresh-fruit drinks at the bar, as well as the usual bar drinks. The staff are friendly and helpful. Breakfast is included, which is great while you're finding your feet for the first time in Hanoi. There's a laundry service that is very efficient and affordable. The guest-house is right by the lake. There's early morning exercise just across the road. There's bars and restaurants as soon as you leave the guest-house. I would highly recommend Musketeers Guesthouse, and would definitely go back next time I visit Hanoi.
