The Marmara Pera

Istanbul|0.79km from Orhan Kemal Museum
Arrived last Friday evening, nice welcome, was informed I had to pay for my room, I had pre-paid, which on inspection, it was agreed I didn't have to pay again.... Dinner on Friday night was exquisite, fabulous service, amazing food, expensive but worth it, the restaurant and rooftop bar are independent of the hotel. Saturday morning, went for a lovely breakfast, back to the room and realised my room door did not lock, informed reception, and a gentleman arrived shortly afterward to check the door. Firstly he said it was my key card that was at fault. When I asked if I could show him the issue, he rolled his eyes and said no. When he did allow me to demonstrate, he walked away from me saying it was technical. I had to call after him to see if it would be fixed, he did not turn around but walking away said, ten minutes. the door was fixed eventually but the whole episode took around an hour. Before I left the hotel (11:20am) I dropped a dress at reception to be pressed. I got back to the hotel just before 9pm, went to my room, no dress, down at reception i asked where it was, the gentleman on reception called the laundry service, and at the end of the call, I had to ask what was happening. I was told laundry would call him back. He then asked what I had left, colour etc. so it could have been in the laundry in a sister hotel, I would get it on Sunday. I explained I was leaving on Sunday and needed the dress now, if it hadn't been ironed yet, to just return it to me.

I have booked at Pera orient hotel because it offers what I want from an hotel during my travels and the feedbacks were in its favor. Just after my booking was done I stumble on a negative review that was posted on trip advisor. I was worried about my choice. But when I went to Istanbul and stayed there, I felt compelled to share my own experience, which was entirely different and absolutely fantastic! I believe it's essential to give credit where credit is due. First of all , if you are seeking a resort , Pera Orient is not a resort and it never claims to be one! My stay at Pera Orient was comfortable and pleasant. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by the friendly and attentive staff, who made their best to help me in every possible way and to answer my queries during my 5-day long stay. Their warm smiles and genuine willingness to assist truly set the tone for my stay. The location of the hotel is ideal. A 6 min walk from the hotel takes you to Taksim square where you can take the Metro or bus to reach your desired destination. And it allowed me to make regular daily walks on istikal street . The street is a little narrow yes, but there are plenty of hotels all around that I have never felt scared or unsafe ( as it was mentioned in the negative review). And I always took the upward direction then turn right towards taksim. I was greeted by a spotless clean room with a tasteful decor. The bed was incredibly comfortable, The housekeeping staff was attentive and meticulous, making sure that my room was impeccably cleaned each day. Coffee and tea were left daily next to the kettle (sometimes with a bottle of water). When I will visit Istanbul again , I will definitely chose Pera Orient to stay in.

I fell for the photos advertised online and on Booking.com and ended up booking this hotel for our Istanbul trip. Well, I really don't know where to start - apart than the location and the friendliness of the breakfast staff, I cannot mention anything positive regarding our stay. Contrary to the highly-polished and strongly-edited photos on Booking.com, the room was unbearable and the hygiene was obviously not a top priority. I found a clipped nail under our drawer (marked in red in photo attached), long hair everywhere and God knows what else was hidden that I (luckily) did not get to see. The walls in the bathroom were full of mold, the towels had holes in them, bathroom floor had a black spot (photo attached) and I had never seen such a dirty hotel in my entire life. On a positive note, the personnel on the breakfast floor were always smiling, attentive and friendly during breakfast time. However, I find it absolutely shameless to advertise such highly-polished photos online whereas the hotel is full of dirt and lacking hygiene. If you are planning to come to Istanbul, do not touch this hotel and spend your money on something else.

Good place, easy to find, close to many places to eat and shop. Love the sofa and coffee table in my room. The coffee table even turns into a computer desk, good idea for digital nomad like me. Good eater pressure in the shower head.

This is really a very far and difficult place to find. If there is not a person standing on the road to claim us, the navigation will not be able to derive this location. I can't believe it is a very narrow cabin where the reception desk is located, and the accommodation is in the residential building opposite. At that time, everyone felt cheated. Was it a liar? The small attic at the front desk secretly took a few pieces of candy and wrapped them in toilet paper. We thought it was some kind of drug that harmed us, who knew it was the candy prepared for us. The sheets have hair, I don’t know if they haven’t been changed or what. It was quite late at the time, and I didn’t get a reply after asking the store. The next day they sent me the sheet that they had changed the sheets and they didn’t clean it up. I’m sorry, but I really didn’t sleep well this night. The picture on the front page of the photo cover and the square apartment I felt very awkward. It was so far away from that square. Why should I use those coordinates to confuse everyone? I think Ctrip is also very problematic. Audited?

In the uphill, the slope is very shaken, the car is driven by the madness of the gas exhaust, and it takes half a life to go up. The room is very good, and there is a bar sofa, it is very clean, the rain is big, the bathing supplies are complete, the breakfast can be delivered to the room, and the smoking is going to the roof terrace garden. The scenery above is very good. My view suite overlooks the city and has a seagull hovering and a lively atmosphere. Going out to call the hotel front desk, the service is very good, thanks
Ditto Flats

The bad: 1) Exact location of the flat is very hard to reach. Taxis cant drive to up to the flat because the street is tiny and block with parked cars so prepare to carry luggage for a few blocks. Also, the street is filthy and dark. 2) The stairs are very dangerous. I honestly cant beleive they are allowed to operate with these stairs (see pix). In some places the stairs less than 2 inches wide and nearly totally verticle. 3) Flat is TINY and very uncomfortable. The pictures are very deceiving. Floors are uneven and dirty. Bathroom is dark. Toilet wont flush. We had to add water to the toilet tank. 4) The 1st floor flat is actually up first about 10 normal stairs, and then up the crazy vertivle stairs. Whereas the ”garden” level flat is up the first 10 normal stairs and then down like 20 very small basement type stairs. The whole place is chopped up in the worst manner in order to absolutely maximize profit by attemtping to create ”flats” out of totally inappropriate spaces. 5) When I requested an extra set of sheets for the sofa bed it resulted in a yelling match with the receptionist questioning my marriage! She asked why we were sleeping in seperate beds and suggested that we should be sleeping in the same bed if we are married. The reality is that the actual bed and bedroom are so small and uncomfortable that in order to give me a little space my husband was going to take a nap on the sofa bed and let me have the normal bed. But they refused to give us sheets, saying ”This is not a hotel. We dont give extra sheets.” 6) We paid for 10 nights - non-refundable - and we left after 1 night. The good (??) - let's call it the - ”not bad”: To be fair - it is cheap - but you get what you pay for. The general location of the flat in Cihangir is great - so I thought 'why not'? But in the end, we preferred to give up 9 paid nights than to stay there any longer because it was so rediculous, uncomforable and unwelcming. Again to be fair - there was one young man who carried our bags up the stairs when we arrived. I dont know his name but he was very nice. (Whereas the woman who was on the whatsapp number was shockigly rude - I actually ended up in tears just from the stress of the terrible place and the super rude treatment from her.)
