Dear Members, I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention an experience we recently had during our visit to Loisaba tented camp, which left us quite confused and disappointed due to several inconsistencies in service and communication. During our stay we expressed our concerns to the manager regarding the noticeable difference in food quality compared to our previous visit. The manager responded by thanking us for the feedback and kindly offering a complimentary neck and back massage, which we genuinely appreciated and accepted in good faith. However, later that evening, we experienced another issue with our meal — the risotto was overly salted. Again, we raised the concern to the manager, clarifying that we dislike wasting food and always strive to finish what we’re served. He reassured us that it was not an issue and that they would be happy to prepare something else, which we declined as we dint ethically want to waste any more. At that point, the concern for cost or waste was not raised. At this time the chef came in person to apologise and we requested for a packed lunch for our travel journey following day. The manager was informed that we requested for this packed lunch however he did not mention that this would be chargeable to us. The following day, as we prepared to return to Nairobi, upon check-out, we were presented with a bill charging $65 per person (totaling $195) for the packed lunch. What was even more surprising was that the charge was applied to all three of us, including a one-year-old infant who is still breastfeeding and only eats small finger foods. When we questioned the rationale behind the cost — especially for a simple meal consisting of a sandwich (bread, lettuce, avocado, tomato), apples, and a basic presentation — the assistant manager consulted with the manager. His justification was that the lodge had "expenses to cover," and removed the charge for the baby hence reduced to $130 and he eventually reduced the charge to $70. Still, this did not seem reasonable or consistent with industry standards or prior hospitality extended by Loisaba as well all the other lodges we have visited across Kenya. This felt particularly disheartening considering the previous night’s willingness to discard an entire meal and prepare another without charge. It created the impression that the complimentary massage might not have been a genuine gesture of goodwill, but rather a manipulative tactic later offset through unexpected charges. We did not argue or escalate the matter further at the time, as we preferred to maintain a respectful atmosphere. However, we believe it’s important to report this incident transparently. Such inconsistencies in guest treatment can significantly affect the trust and reputation Loisaba has built. We appreciate your attention to this matter and trust that appropriate steps will be taken to ensure justice is done to this matter with utmost integrity.
