The Tropicana building is impressive, exquisite and superbly located, adjacent to the iconic Petronas Towers.
My apartment was large, clean, modern, glossy and spacious, with a very comfortable bed, crisp linens and four wonderfully plump pillows.
The open-air infinity pool on the 53rd floor, with the Petronas Towers in the foreground, was exceptionally breathtaking and utterly sensational.
BUT the management and customer experience was so extraordinarily poor that I would urge anyone considering staying here to read the following VERY carefully.
I arrived bursting with excitement for this indulgent stay - I had purposefully upgraded to a superior room to enjoy a private view of the Petronas Towers from the luxury of my apartment - together with a fully confirmed and prepaid booking.
I arrived at the ground-floor lobby and management could not locate my reservation, there was no greeting or warm welcome.
Once found, I was unexpectedly escorted from the ground-floor lobby to the 25th floor. Here, the immediate priority was extraction of an extra MYR 300 refundable security deposit. This came as an unwelcome surprise.
Nevertheless, I reluctantly prepared to pay but was informed that neither my debit card nor my Visa credit card could be processed. I was told to leave the hotel and find an ATM to obtain cash. I was travelling alone, exhausted and refused this suggestion. I offered my passport as security, which suggestion was initially accepted, and then rejected.
Eventually, I was "allowed" into my room on the proviso that I would find the money and return to reception to pay the deposit.
The lift wait times were unreasonably long.
Once inside my room, I discovered:
• My room door was unlocked.
• No towels.
• The dishwasher did not work.
• The water dispenser did not work.
• The marble bathroom floor was lethal and perilously slippery when wet.
• The air conditioning is restricted to 25°C, despite the controls allowing a lower temperature.
• Cockroach in the kitchen.
I received the property's detailed checkout instructions on the last evening of my 2 night stay. These stated checkout was 11:00am at the ground-floor lobby (not reception on the 25th floor. A "room inspection" would take 10-15 minutes before the prepaid deposit would be released. During peak periods "lift waiting times could apparently reach 30-60 minutes", with queues at the ground-floor lobby.
Prepaid deposits are deducted by MYR 100 if you're late to check out, so their delayed lifts help generate extra revenue.
Poor management completely ruined a wonderful experience.
I had never experienced a hotel/residence where the arrival experience felt so focused on securing MYR 300 from the guest rather than welcoming them and helping them settle in.
The property contacted me repeatedly on my personal WhatsApp about the deposit, despite my request that communication go through Trip.com. This was extremely upsetting and seriously affected my enjoyment of my stay.
The 53rd-floor infinity pool and the apartment itself were the highlights. But beautiful surroundings could not compensate for poor hospitality, a highly stressful check-in, aggressive deposit procedures, inadequate guest information, missing basic amenities, maintenance problems, inadequate air conditioning, a perilously slippery bathroom floor and a cockroach in the kitchen.
For me, what should have been a special splurge stay was overshadowed by the management experience from the moment I arrived.
