First of all I'd like to mention that I've received an unrequested room upgrade to a room with private bathroom. In return I was asked insistently to give 5 stars in all categories. I denied this request finally and offered to give 5 stars, if I was fully satisfied or give no review at all, if I wasn't. This offer was not accepted. So, this is my honest review of the stay.
I was able to get to the given address. It's a tall building (explicitly stated that building, so one would expect it to be inside of it), but actually the office is not inside of that tall building, but next door as I was directed by a local resident who I asked for help. But there was only a sign with the offered rooms and the same phone number which was given with the confirmation. As I don't have a Chinese SIM card for phone calls, I was not able to reach out to the host by calling. I opened my booking on trip.com and tried to use the messaging option which was supposed to contact me with the host. But instead I only received stupid answers by trip.com's AI. I was lucky to have a relative who was only and who called the host for me. After a while a woman appeared and explained to me and another guest who had arrived a bit later than myself that the room was not at this building. She also told me that there wouldn't be enough space for my luggage. I left my luggage at their "office" which is in a small corridor next to the main entrance of that building. While the latter one is protected by a locked front door which requires a transponder to be unlocked, this corridor stays unlocked 24/7. At first she didn't want me to secure my bags, but I did it anyway. Later on she told me that I did it wrong by putting them the way I did, because it would disturb their staff as the bags weren't aligned flat to the wall. I explained to her that I chose to put it that way intentionally to save space for further guests. She remained at her view that my choice was not well thought through and added that the space was not needed as there weren't many guests at that time.
The room itself was very small, maybe even smaller than the booked one with shred bathroom, but I didn't care. What also didn't bother me a lot was the size of the bed which only measured 1,79m as I am only 1,70m. What did catch my attention though was the dust on the TV and the fan. The former one only had a very limited choice of pay-on-demand movies and online news clips. The WiFi key is simply the same for all rooms, but instead of simply printing it on a piece of paper they ask you to scan a QR, open a page, click on your room number only to find out that it's always the same (8 times the 8).
The shower was okay for usual showering durations, but at some point it will become cold water only and remain that way for a long period. The toilet is only of a squat style, but the flush was very effective. There were two slim rolls of toilet paper for my two nights stay. But there is no position in the bathroom to keep it (protected from the shower). Shower soap and shampoo was provided, but the latter one wasn't of any good quality. (Just mentioning it, not part of the rating.)
The location could be good. Actually, it is good, but with no further information provided gao de maps will route you via a passenger underway with no elevator which can become a nightmare, if you have a lot of luggage. A simple sentence as part of the property's description would have helped a lot. As well as some information on how to proceed after arriving at the given address, if nobody was there. In general it's located closely to Kunming central station and a lot of restaurants and mini-marts with some of them open 24h.
In the middle of the second night cigarette smoke from the neighbour's room came into my room and made it really hard for me to continue my sleep.
Nevertheless the price is okay for a private room, especially if you need to get to the railway station early in the morning.
