"The location is a bit far from Kinosaki Station, but it is very convenient for playing golf. The staff are very friendly. Although they don’t speak English, they still try their best to introduce you. There are indoor and open-air hot springs, and the open-air ones are fenced, but it feels a bit private. Breakfast is The Japanese style is very rich; our room is on the second floor, and we have to carry our luggage, which is a bit inconvenient."

"This place blew us away. The location was close to the beach where we had a swim and the onsen at the location was the finest I had ever experienced. The room had a tatami area for sleeping and a little dining and cooking nook that we ended up using each day. The meals at the various restaurants were delicious and accompanied by stunning views of the hills and sea. We had such a restful time here that we would definitely wish to return."

"The location of the hotel is relatively rural. From the road, the building is very low-key, but entering the inside is infected by the warm and elegant atmosphere, especially when you come to the room, the floor-to-ceiling windows on both walls can see the beautiful scenery from the lake sunset, and the sunset time is reflected in the sunset. Dinner is a surprise, the crab meat package is launched in winter, but the Italian cooking method is used, the rich sauce makes the crab meat very delicious, the soup, spaghetti, pancakes are unforgettable, the grilled crab meat is then dipped in the crab paste sauce, rich in layers. Breakfast bread basket scrambled egg cheese, full weight, fresh and healthy. Every staff member. Very proactive and courteous, will nod to say hello until the guests leave. The introduction of the dishes is as hard as possible in English as possible, which made my stay very pleasant. In addition, the hotel also has a hot spring although not big, but because there are not many guests, I am a person to use, open-air massage hot spring can see the lake and the starry sky can enjoy a quiet atmosphere."

Ujo Soan (Adult Only)

"Our recent stay at Ujo Soan was, without exaggeration, the finest hospitality experience I have encountered in my 20 years of traveling across Japan. From the moment we arrived, the level of service was nothing short of superb. There are three highlights that made our stay truly unforgettable: 1. Exceptional Culinary Surprise: We were deeply touched by the hotel's generosity in providing a complimentary upgrade to the prestigious "Tsuiyama Blue Label Crab" set. The quality of the crab and the meticulous preparation were world-class—a true gastronomic journey. 2. Breathtaking Sunset Views: Spending time at the Lounge "AO" on the 8th floor of Bettei Fuka was a spiritual experience. Watching the sunset over the Kyotango coastline with a drink in hand is a memory we will cherish forever. 3. Outstanding Service (Sakura-san): A special mention must go to Sakura-san. Her professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail were exemplary. She anticipated our every need and represents the very best of Japanese Omotenashi. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Mr. Yasuhiko Okita and the General Manager, Mr. Nakanishi, for maintaining such an incredible standard of excellence. If you are looking for a sanctuary that combines luxury, nature, and heartfelt service, Ujo Soan is the only choice. We cannot wait to return."

"I go somewhere every year to eat crab. I always decide to go around January at short notice, so it's often closed. I thought it might be a little old-fashioned, so I went without high expectations. However, the room was a traditional Japanese-style room, but by chance, there was a vacancy and I was upgraded to an ocean view room, which was amazing! They also had a room available, so I was able to enjoy a leisurely meal of a huge amount of crab! They even brought the rice porridge I couldn't finish to my room, so I was able to enjoy it again when I got hungry while drinking in my room, which was great! You can also bring your own alcohol! It's an absolutely wonderful inn! It's the best! (You can also take home any crab you can't finish.) The bath isn't that big, but the bathtub is like a jacuzzi, which was really nice for someone with a sore back. There was also a small open-air bath, so I felt like I was at a hot spring! And best of all, it's open 24 hours a day, which is rare these days! I'm so grateful that I don't have to rush around during bath time!! The breakfast wasn't extravagant, and I'm not the type to eat a hearty meal in the morning, but it was enough. The salted fish served at breakfast was pickled in koji, which was really delicious. I asked the landlady and found out it was homemade, so I bought a few to take home, but my family loved them so much that they were gone in no time, and I wish I had bought more! It's just a regular inn, but the landlady and all the staff were so friendly and helpful, and it was such a great place to stay! I'll definitely return! Since I was there for the crab, they had heaters in the hallways to keep out the cold in the winter, but the shared bathroom was a bit cold because it's old, which is a bit of a downside, but it was worth it! The entire inn was spotlessly clean, and since it was the beginning of the year, we were given toso sake at the front desk. The food and service were far better than at expensive hotels!"

"This hotel was such a pleasant surprise! During my solo trip to Japan, I mainly opted for one-night, two-meal onsen hotels, falling in love with this kind of vacation where you soak in hot springs and enjoy meticulously prepared meals. Many onsen hotels offer single-person packages for small rooms, while larger rooms are usually for two people. This hotel had two top-floor suites offering single-person packages, which was fantastic. Plus, it wasn't a purely Japanese tatami room, which I didn't like; it was a newly renovated Japanese-Western style, much better than the rooms at more famous hotels like Kashoen and Shizukasen. The hotel is located near Yuhiura Kizu Onsen Station. A special note: there's no public transportation to this station; you must have the hotel pick you up. I told Ctrip customer service my arrival time the day before to arrange it, and all the hotels here offer pick-up services. You can also call upon arrival and wait about ten minutes for the hotel shuttle. Check-in was at 3 PM, and I was shown to my room around 2:30 PM. The lobby was average, but the room exceeded my expectations—beautiful beyond the ocean view, well-designed, elegantly furnished, and with excellent facilities. The most outstanding design was the suite's separate small dining area, preventing food smells from lingering in the room. The high table was very comfortable, much better than eating in the room at Kinosaki Nishimuraya. The hot spring was at just the right temperature; soaking in it while enjoying the sea view was incredibly pleasant. Dinner was a crab meal, very generous in portion and of excellent quality; we ate the crab meat as our main course. Breakfast was a bit simple, as no milk was provided. We checked out at 11 am, thoroughly enjoying the thoughtfully designed room without even leaving the hotel. The hotel had many Japanese guests, as well as some foreigners who came specifically for the hotel. There were foreign staff members, and the service was excellent, with warm and attentive service. This hot spring town is very quiet with a beach, but there's almost no tourism or commercial activity. Visitors mainly come to enjoy the sea views, hot springs, and cuisine at the various hotels. There's no dedicated hot spring shopping street, making it ideal for those driving. Alternatively, you can visit Amanohashidate in the morning, have lunch, and then stay at this hotel. The food and sea views are better than at hotels in Amanohashidate. Don't arrive too late; it gets dark by 5 pm and you can't see the sea anymore."

Kyoto Taizaonsen Sumiheiryokan

"During our annual pilgrimage to the Hokuriku and San'in regions in Western Honshu, we’ve stayed at some of Japan’s finest properties that combine high-quality accommodations with an extraordinary Zuwai-gani (Snow crab) dining experience. Nishimuraya Honkan, Yado Shiontei, Monjusou Shorotei, and Bouyourou have all been notable standouts, yet there remained one prominent destination on our to-visit list: Taiza Onsen Sumihei, tucked away on the Tango Peninsula in Kyoto Prefecture. Before I describe our experience at Sumihei, it’s worth delving into the world of Snow crab and its regional distinctions, because in Japan, not all crabs are created equal. Zuwai-gani, the generic term for Snow crab, is a winter delicacy spanning Shimane, Tottori, Hyogo, Kyoto, Fukui, Ishikawa, and Toyama Prefectures. While Snow crabs are also found as far north as Hokkaido, the taste quality noticeably diminishes beyond Toyama. Male crabs are called Zuwai-gani, while females are referred to as Seko-gani or Kobako-gani; in Kyoto’s Tango region, the females are called Koppe-gani. Beni Zuwai-gani (Red Snow Crab) is a different species with a more muted flavor. The Snow crab season runs from early November to early March, and tourists flock to the region primarily during this period to feast on these crustaceans. Taiza-gani can legally be fished only from November 7 to March 20. The Sea of Japan provides perfect conditions for Snow crab: icy waters averaging 2°C (the Pacific Ocean side averages 10°C), rich in nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, create firm, crisp meat packed with umami. When you taste it, the sweetness spreads immediately and lingers. During our 2022 stay at Bouyourou, the executive chef described it poetically, and I can only echo his words: there is a subtle poetry in a perfectly cooked Snow crab. Zuwai-gani are sold under a range of brand names depending on where they are caught and where they land. Only the best, based on weight, firmness, color, and absence of blemishes, earn top-tier branding, with hand-attached tags denoting their distinction. Seven major Snow crab brands dominate Western Japan, recognized widely through a Hankyu Travel survey: • Echizen-gani: Landed in Fukui Prefecture, historically Echizen Province; dubbed the "King of Snow crabs." • Matsuba-gani: Found in southern Hyogo, Tottori, Shimane, and parts of Kyoto. • Taiza-gani: From Taiza on the Tango Peninsula. • Maizuru-kani: Large crabs from Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture. • Kano-gani: Ishikawa Prefecture. The name comes from the first kanji in the names KAga and NOto (two former feudal domains which now comprises Ishikawa). • Tsuiyama-kani: From Tsuiyama in Hyogo Prefecture. • Shibayama-gani: From Shibayama in Hyogo Prefecture. While Echizen-gani is often hailed as the pinnacle of Snow crab, Taiza-gani occasionally commands similar auction prices due to its unique flavor, texture, and rarity. Only five fishing boats operate out of Taiza Port, and winter conditions often prevent "

"The facade is unremarkable. As soon as you enter the check-in auditorium, you will be deeply attracted by the view of the large glass and leave a very good impression. You can also see a deer grazing in the Japanese garden outside the window. The lobby is generally very comfortable. The room I stayed in is a Japanese mixed Western style. It is comfortable, but the wardrobe is behind the bed. It is a bit difficult to get in and out of clothes. The view of the open-air hot spring is a little thinner. The dinner is a full crab feast, which is very plentiful and delicious. I highly recommend it, but it is a bit more expensive when viewing cherry blossoms in the peak season."
