We contacted the Black Lion to arrange a family get together to celebrate a birthday, and the whole experience was amazing from start to finish. Dee, Ceri and their team were just faultless - nothing was too much trouble leading up to the event, and they tended to our every need on the day - they even joined in to sing ‘happy birthday’! From the perfectly cooked meal to the scrummy desserts, everything was just perfect - not to mention the amazing birthday cake they also provided! Wow! I would not hesitate to recommend the Black Lion to anyone

Absolutely terrible. On arrival the manager kept us waiting 20 minutes while she was on the phone, fair enough but she didn't apologise or acknowledge us. Once seated, we were eating our starter and she asked if we wanted our main course. Er no I don't think so! Then we asked for no mushy peas with one meal and his dinner came with some and we both had burnt chips. We said could she take it away and remove the peas and put new chips.. She took it away and after a few minutes, came back with uncooked chips, overcooked fish and the peas! We'd had enough by then and said we didn't want it now and I had finished my burger (but not the chips!) We went to pay and stood there waiting again for her. She took money off the bill for the uneaten dinner but as she (the manager!) was rude we asked to talk to the owner/chef. She said pay the bill but we said we were not paying until we'd spoken to the owner, she said we were being rude and called us a theif! The chef admitted the first round of chips were burnt and shouldn't have sent them out but the second lot were perfect, apparently. We have never complained at a restaurant before so when he asked what we wanted, we said we weren't after a free meal or anything we were just unhappy with the service and it had ruined my birthday meal. Anyway he told her to take 50% off. She wasn't happy! (Good job we didn't pay when she ordered us to.) There were only us 2 and 3 other people in there so it's not because they were rushed off their feet. They also gave one of the other people the wrong dinner! And forgot the old ladies glass of water... Never going back there again unless they have a different staff 🤬 Service was unacceptably slow. Only 5 diners and they messed up 2 dinner orders. Disappointing and upsetting.

Wasn’t the best experience. The waitress took the order but didn’t write it down. The result was incorrectly cooked food, sides missing and delays in the order arriving. Expensive for the quality. Slow service and as we were not local, felt like the waitress was slightly derogatory towards us.

We came here because of the good reviews but were actually quite disappointed. We expected that it may be quiet as it was a week night but that meant the staff were also mostly absent and we had to go find someone multiple times so that we could order food and drinks. Food was okay but the steak was not cooked as requested, coming well done when medium was ordered. Staff do not write down orders which may look good but then they miss parts meaning the sides came halfway through the main meal. The restaurant is pleasant enough but overpriced for the quality of food served.

My third stay at this hotel. Very friendly welcome as usual. Breakfast to die for, absolutely scrummy. I've not had a main meal for a while, but they looked good last night when I booked in. Thoroughly recommend this lovely hotel and eating house.

We were initially uncertain about this place, having had the food described to us as Pub Grub, There is, by the way, nothing wrong with Pub Grub, but it can hide a multitude of sins. Anyway, the food here surpassed expectations and was terrific. We will visit again.

The Sunday lunch is one of the best we've ever had. We've had meals there before, both on a Sunday & otherwise days & they've always been of the highest quality. The cauliflower cheese is one of finest we've tasted. Wherever the cheese is sourced, it is really tasty. Keep it up, chef. All in all, the visits we've experienced both in the past & today can't be faulted.

I have just visited the Black Lion with a group of friends. I ordered the rib-eye steak and asked the waiter if I could swap the chips for a side salad. I was informed that this was not possible as the meal came plated as stated on the menu. I explained that I could not eat chips due to medical reasons but this was not taken into account. So basically for £26.95 I got an 8oz steak, half a tomato and an extremely small mushroom. To add insult to injury, I requested my steak rare. The steak when it did come, was medium cooked. It was a uniform thickness so the chef couldn’t use that as an excuse for it being overdone and it was also cold. I am extremely disappointed after spending that amount of money and then getting home to cook myself something to eat! I will never come here again and I very much doubt any of my friends will either! What an appalling service. Not recommended at all. Stay well clear of this place!!

As visitors to Lampeter we were recommended to go to the Black Lion for lunch. After spending time marvelling at the Treasures of the university library we arrived hungry at the Black Lion. After a warm welcome we were given the choice of the fine tables in the elegant dining room. Drinks came quickly thanks to a super helpful waitress and we ordered a range of starters for a light lunch. The cheese and onion tartlet was first class, perfect short pastry and delicious filling. Best of all was the superb home made chutney. Then I had the ham hock which came with cauliflower mousse - that too was excellent and nicely garnished. I asked for bread and a board with warm focaccia soon arrived with herby olive oil and a pot of good olives. This was a remarkably fine lunch with cooking and presentation of a very high standard. A real mid Wales gem.
