"This is probably the worst place I’ve ever stayed. I arrived to be ‘greeted’ by the very grumpy and unfriendly Thai owner who really couldn’t have cared less. The room was up numerous stairs (I had a lot of luggage) and was lack lustre, in desperate need of re-decorating and some decent furnishings. The towels were thread bare, the duvet too small for the bed, the pillows were smelly and bed linen only fit for recycling. I couldn’t face breakfast as the breakfast room smelt musty and grubby and was in desperate need of a deep clean. I do not recommend this establishment and couldn’t wait to leave."

"We stayed here for 6 nights and had a very decent sized room on the top floor which gave us terrific views. The guesthouse is perfectly placed in Lerwick, easy walk to everywhere in town and close to the main road both North and South. The bathroom was large with a bath over the shower and room could be serviced every day if you required it. There was also a washing machine and dryer for guest use. A full Scottish breakfast was available every day if you desired it but there was also yoghurt fruit cereal etc. There is no designated parking, just what is available on the street. We never had an issue accessing parking. The owner is relatively new to the business I think and he is a very nice, friendly chap. Rooms could do with a little bit of updating and dusting but overall a very happy and comfortable week for us."

"Food was ok, pork medallions not medallions and overdone, tough in places. Chefs veg watery and a heap of red cabbage which was already on the plate. Dining room has great views but all public areas looking tired and dated, hasn't had a face lift in over 20 years so sadly overdue. If your looking for great food it's a no If you just want a unexceptional meal it's ok."

Queens Hotel

Queens Hotel

📍 24 Commercial St, Lerwick
★★★ 6.0 (49 reviews)

"We booked here for one night as our holiday rental property was not available until the following day, and we were unable to secure any other accommodation in Lerwick. Superficially, an attractive historic building right on the sea, and a few minutes stroll from Lerwick Town centre. Otherwise I think this place struggles to fill the definition of a hotel. There was no receptionist on our arrival, only a hand written note with a mobile number to call. It was answered at the third attempt, and the staff arrived after about 10 minutes. To be fair, he was polite and courteous, and helped with our luggage, and showed us to our room. The bed was at least clean and comfortable. The hotel has no functioning restaurant, bar, or lounge, and we were advised to use the Grand Hotel for food and drinks, which we were later told by local residents belongs to the same owner. We couldn't ignore the damp and black mould on the walls in our room, a tiny TV which was wall mounted at ceiling level, exposed electrical wires to a trouser press, and wallpaper coming away from the walls behind the reception desk and in the corridors. We were woken the next morning by a fire alarm at 6.15 am, went to reception to be told there was no emergency by the one member of staff available. Fortunately Lerwick has some very welcoming restaurants and cafes. A couple we met on our trip who had also been booked into The Queens, told us they were shown to their room, and the toilet seat was propped up against the sink. They cancelled their booking and managed to secure alternative accommodation for the week. One cafe owner we got chatting to said " we deserved a medal " for staying there, so our experience does not appear to be unique. This place has so much potential given its location, but is either being deliberately run down, or knowingly run extremely poorly on a shoestring. Having been quoted £160 for the on line booking several weeks before, the experience was frankly laughable. Avoid if you have the choice."

Fort Charlotte Guest House

"Excellent Guesthouse. Very clean, tidy & comfortable. Ryan is very knowledgeable and a great source of local information. The breakfasts are fabulous and prepared to your request (crispy bacon!). The kitchen area is in full view of the breakfast room and it was spotless! Perfect. There's a good selection of breakfast options to choose from. Ryan and Anita's team: Linda (mum), Kelly and Madison are lovely and really happy & helpful. The cosy ambience of the breakfast room for us fostered lots of chitchat with the other guests and we learnt of other things to go and do. Our room was well kept, nicely recently decorated and clean shower room. Good supply of towels and shampoo, shower gel, conditioner. Well stocked coffee and tea tray plus fresh milk everyday in the mini fridge. Bedding was all clean and fresh. Carpets spotless! Location is everything. The guesthouse is in Lerwick with good restaurants close by (literally a few minutes walk away). Use Ryan's recommended ones. The Guesthouse is a stones throw from the Brassay ferry and the birdwatching boats (highly recommend Phil Harris' 2.5 hour excursion). There's a lovely elevated patio area at the back of the guesthouse and one evening we bought a bottle of wine from a local shop and sat there and had a very good haddock & chips bought from the local chippy a mere 50m away. A great way to finish our stay! PS Lerwick is very quiet, so no late night noise. Also car parking is very close by."

Glen Orchy House ★★
"I stayed at the Glen Orchy Hotel in Lerwick while working in Shetland, and it proved to be a convenient base. The accommodation is basic, dated, but mostly clean — which, in truth, sums up much of the hotel offering across the islands. It’s straightforward, functional, and does the job - just. The location is very handy: around an 8–10 minute walk to Commercial Street, where you’ll find most of Lerwick’s shops, banks, and cafés. A highlight is the view over Brei Wick. Breakfast was a relative strong point — cooked to order and a good way to start the day. If there’s one area that could be improved, it’s the towels and toiletries. The towels would benefit from being larger and better quality, and the toiletries dispenser currently produces something a bit too reminiscent of washing‑up liquid. Small tweaks, but they’d make a noticeable difference. Overall, if you’re visiting Lerwick for work or travel and want simple accommodation with good views and breakfast, the Glen Orchy is a reasonable choice. ---"

"Really friendly and helpful owners who went the extra mile to make my stay a lovely one. Nice clean room, perhaps could benefit from a couple of drinking glasses, and a surface or at least hooks in the bathroom for wash bag and clothes. Otherwise, perfectly adequate. Good breakfast and other than no jugs for milk on the table (I used a cup), it was spot-on...... Toast, boiled egg, fruit, yogurt, cheese and even smoked salmon - a real treat. Choice of teas and coffee."

The Lerwick Hotel ★★★
"Mixed feelings about this review as some issues were excellent others not so. Firstly it's hard not to escape cost of hotel accommodation in Lerwick & it's right to expect high standards. I arrived at the hotel off the morning Northlink Ferry which after a 25/30 minute walk meant I arrived well before check in time. Fully expected my bag to be stored, however receptionist couldn't have been more helpful & informed me my room was ready which I really appreciated. Location of the hotel just off South Road was ideal for my purposes with a large supermarket barely 10mins walk, close to a well defined coastal walk round The Knab or a 15-20 mins walk to Lerwick Harbour/Port. View at the back of the hotel is stunning. My room seemed a little dated with some of the furniture scratched & as I later discovered a very small bathroom with very weak shower. TV seemed to reboot itself every so often but otherwise ok Had an evening meal in the Bay Brasserie which was excellent. Quality of pate for starter & haddock for main course was very good. All in all excellent evening meal. Breakfasts in the hotel were decent & during my stay had cereals, hot food & kipper which to be honest was just ok. All the staff I met were friendly & helpful & overall enjoyed my stay but just expected more for the cost "

"Had reservation 4/3 & 4/4/2025. Arrived no staff at front desk; had to call phone number for staff; bags of laundry in foyer; non working bar and restaurant.. looked at rooms - horrible condition- a fire trap. Limited view of water thru 24”x36” window that didn’t open. Paint peeling; bed not even level. Scaffolding along street side exterior. Very run down. We had to remit in advance and owner will not refund our money. We canceled after seeing rooms and condition of property. Don’t let hotel’s web site photos fool you- this property is a dump."
