★★★ 8.8 (13 reviews)

"Passing through as needed a one night stay to break up my journey. Check in via the bar. Rooms are basic but clean with usual tea and coffee. Shower is very noisy! It's also a busy locals pub so be prepared for a little bit of noise. After a few pints of the local beers it didn't bother me too much. Personally I enjoyed the atmosphere. Staff are absolutely fantastic and we even got a quick tour of the small brewery behind the pub. We also ate there in the evening which was fine as was the included breakfast You should know that Clun is a very quiet town and apart from here and the Spa supermarket and a couple of places near the bridge there is nothing else. Of course there is the ruins which is a must see. "

The Lowfield Inn

The Lowfield Inn

📍 Marton, Welshpool, Chirbury with Brompton
★★★★ 9.2 (102 reviews)

"We spent 1 night at Lowfield inn on the way to a wedding. It was first class. Lovely room, great service, fabulous evening meal and breakfast (vegetarian). Would thoroughly recommend."

The Lion Hotel

The Lion Hotel

📍 The lion hotel, Barriew, Welshpool
★★★ 9.2 (27 reviews)

"Attentive and friendly service in the bar and restaurant with beer and food imaginative and reasonably priced. Nice to see it reopened after it's (rather quirky) refurbishment. Powys and mid-Wales is a lovely part of the world not overrun by tourists yet - just far enough off the beaten track to be peaceful when eating outside! Well worth a visit!"

The White Horse Inn, Clun ★★★
"We are just back from a wonderful weekend away at the White Horse. What a place! A great pub which brews its' own (very good) beer. We had a couple of rooms which were very clean, quiet, very comfortable and excellent value for money. We ate two meals in the pub which were both very good - my Steak Pudding was superb. The pub is a cracker and we were made to feel very welcome by the locals. The area is beautiful. A very sparsely populated and peaceful area which we found very good for walking. I would recommend the White Horse very highly and intend to re-visit. Thanks for a great stay."

The Lowfield Inn ★★★★
"A Wonderful Stay at the Lowfield Inn – A Hidden Gem on the English-Welsh Border We had a fantastic stay at the Lowfield Inn and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Our family room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable, with plenty of room to relax, including a sofa. The bed was especially comfortable, ensuring a great night’s sleep in a quiet and peaceful setting. The inn features a lovely common area and a roof terrace with a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside. The scenery is stunning and perfect for enjoying long walks along the border between England and Wales. The pub itself is a true highlight—offering a great selection of traditional cask ales and a very welcoming beer garden where you can enjoy the evening sun. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and the staff are genuinely helpful and accommodating. We particularly appreciated the thoughtful touches, such as pencils and paper provided for children. As for the food: it was excellent and exceeded our expectations. The menu offers a wonderful mix of traditional English pub fare and Indian dishes, all prepared with creativity and care. The starters were delicious, the mains were generous and satisfying, and the desserts were absolutely indulgent. The children’s menu was also well thought out and very appealing. Breakfast was equally impressive, with a wide selection and very generous portions—no one left hungry! There’s also plenty of parking space, which made everything even easier. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return the next time we’re in the area."
