Small Luxury Hotels of the World - the Academy

Bloomsbury London|0.26km from Architectural Association
The photos and website information about The Academy are incredibly deceptive about this boutique hotel. Sounded and looked lovely online and with a middling price of £188.00 per night B&B sounded a good choice for a solo mini trip to London. The reality was incredibly different. The hotel is scruffy and shabby and the loos smell of fish. Sadly, the service was non-existent and not at the level I would expect of a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. I had a single room (which I chose as it was just me) on the ground floor overlooking the courtyard. It as very basic, but adequate and unlike the other reviews, it was quiet (except from the noisy air-con system). The en-suite was tiny, but the shower was reasonably powerful. As many have already mentioned, the room was stiflingly hot, with a small and inadequate air-con unit which struggled with the heat. I can only imagine what it would have been like when we had the 40C heatwave. I struggled to use the remote control device to work the air con and so, at 12.30am in my dressing gown, I went in search of someone to help me. Daniel came into my room and helped me to get the aircon working and it tried its best to cool the room down. By the next day, and with it on 24/7 the room did finally cool down. As someone else has also mentioned the lights from the aircon system lit up the whole room like a disco! The lights outside the room in the corridor also didn't turn off at night and so the room was bathed in a bright white light from outside and red, green and yellow lights from various fuse things in the room. So, once the air-con was working as best as it could, my attention then turned to the lights! I propped open the en-suite door to block out the light from the corridor, and then managed to pin and stuff towels and a spare pillow case over the disco lights to dim the bright glare. As you can imagine, the first night was a bit of a nightmare with not much sleep. Breakfast the next day was good and the staff in The Refectory were the first to greet me with a welcoming smile and were so helpful and attentive. The breakfast (and staff in the Refectory) have saved this review from being the lowest rating of Terrible. I am incredibly disappointed with my two night stay at The Academy and regret staying there. To finish on a positive note, the location was great and easy to walk to all the places that I wanted to walk to. So great location for Soho, Piccadilly, Covent Garden etc, but poor service and a tired and tatty hotel. So, Bloomsbury is super, just choose an alternative hotel.

Quirky, boutique style Hotel in a great location for shopping, theatres etc.. but our experience meant no sleep at all! Unfortunately our room (115, first floor) had a balcony/window which opened right onto an events/club (HERE at Outernet) which has day & night events so non stop continuous noise & queues right outside. Night events going on after 4am so be prepared for no sleep. Not just noisy from the music but from queues of screaming/shouting people right outside. We were assured on arrival that we wouldn't hear anything from our room and it was quiet but sadly this was the complete opposite. We did raise the issue after our first night and considered checking out but again we were reassured there wouldn't be noise as there wasn't an event on that evening. I suppose we shouldn't have trusted it but we did and yet again another sleepless night as there was a night event that hadn't been advertised! It was a rare birthday treat (escaping 2 children) which sadly left us both exhausted but mainly frustrated that staff weren't truthful or overly bothered with helping us. We also had cigarette smoke coming through our Bathroom Saturday morning apparently from a guest smoking in their room! I had to follow up on this issue as again no-one seemed too bothered about it. Im still waiting for a reply from the manager! Couple of other things to note the extra service charge is true - you'll be charged unbeknown from the deposit, no kettle/water/milk in rooms. but these are minor issues compared to getting no sleep which in my opinion is one of the main objectives of a good hotel....

Staff were very helpful and friendly. I got upgraded free to the refurbished room from the classic room I booked. Small room and bathroom but with great facilities, a window that works and blinds plus curtains that block out the light. A little noisy because of the street down below but not bad. The room had a nice new AC unit and the shower pressure was very strong, maybe a little too strong with no clear way to reduce the pressure (it's either on or off).

Code given to access lift and my room not working, staff had to follow me to my room to let me in. I asked if I can have a new code just in case I need to go out or I get locked out. He said he will get back to me but never. I went downstairs to collect my food delivery after 30mins and bumped into that same staff, he walked past me without even saying sorry or hi. Have to asked the front desk to give me a new code. Lift was a bit glitchy, no free coffee or milk or anything. Everything in the room costs money. Ridiculous

Great price for a stay in London. It was a nice room too, with everything you need. Only downfall was having to pay to hold luggage.

Prime location just off Oxford Street, close to theatre, tubes. Clean bedding, hot water, tv, hairdryer, clean fresh towels - yes rooms are a little small but when all you need is a bed for the night after sightseeing all day absolutely perfect. All staff were more than welcoming and helpful, we arrived at 12.00 to leave bags and were straight away shown to our room. It is undergoing an upgrade after chatting to the lovely guy on reception, and they are doing it very tastefully. Felt very safe there ( I stayed with my 16 year old daughter) slept well and there was absolutely no rush to be checked out, very casual and accommodating - really cannot faut this little gem for anyone waning a cheap, budget break - highly recommend - thank you to all of the team at the Cheshire for having us, we will be back:)

This was my first time in London. I stayed at the Bloomsbury Hotel and I cannot say enough good things about The Bloomsbury. The hotel was luxurious, my room was immaculate and well appointed. But the best part of the Bloomsbury was the staff, everyone was polite and welcoming and always willing to help. I would be remiss not to give a shout out to Nayeema and Suhaina, the two girls working the front desk who spent an enormous amount of time with me helping to get me checked into my flight back to Arizona, both of them literally walked the extra mile to ensure I was checked in properly. The premium lodgings, plus high-quality staff members e.g. Nayeema and Suhaina insure all of my future business when I visit London. David

The decoration and content of the hotel will not go into details, it is not advanced. But I have booked here for the last three days because of the good location. Oxford Street bears the brunt of gift shopping, the British Museum is within easy reach, and Trafalgar Square is not far away. Of course, if you must define gift-giving gifts in the category of Harold, well, it's a little far away. In addition, the breakfast is average and the service is very good. I said I was too tired, so I found a relatively large room not facing the street if I wanted to be quiet. There is a line of Korean dishes around the hotel. I don’t know why they line up. There is also a restaurant with three Uyghur Chinese characters written on it. The owner is probably a Central Asian who can’t speak Chinese, but the dishes are enough to relieve the pain of homesickness. Lamb is real! Shaxian snacks are also two minutes' walk away.
