The Standard London

Kings Cross-Islington London|0.51km from Foundling Museum
Just finished a four night stay at the Standard Hotel in London. This is my first trip back to London post Covid and wanted to find the latest and greatest and the Standard has raised the bar in the hotel and hot spot scene. I put the concierge team to the test as I always do and Istvan and his team did not disappoint. I sent a very detailed request of things I wanted to and places I wanted to go before I arrived. Upon arrival I was happy to accept a room upgrade from George at the front desk and he was quite helpful showing me around and we struck up a conversation about football. Upon entering my room I saw it had a massive terrace with beautiful teak furniture over looking the city center. The room was stylish and chic and cutting edge and even a bit “quirky” as the brand is known for. The restaurant on the first floor Isla, is as cool as you can imagine. The lobby flows into the restaurant with outdoor seating that is heated with a gas fireplace which is a nice touch. The service and food were spot on and the lobby feels like a home as it is filled with books, dj booth and the cool London locals as well as the jet set crowd. I went to see Istvan at the concierge desk who was put to the task of getting tickets for a few soccer/football matches for me. I was floored by the front row tickets he gave me. He sorted out trains, boats, cable cars and restaurants. I can’t imagine better service could be had. Saving the best for last, Decimo on the 10th floor is the place to be and people watch. The mix of music and food was the cool vibe that everyone tries to imitate but never does. The hotel is directly across the street from St. Pancras station and Kings Cross. International, or national rail lines as well as the tube/subway. There is not a better location in London as it literally is the heart beat of the city. Nice to see a hotel living up to the hype. Actually, they surpass it.

Y'all, we will return again and again. We just discovered this rather modest and plain building ten months ago. I kid, of course, about the building. It's incredible. Jaw dropping. And, surprisingly, full of natural light. We came back to London just to stay here. Checked out last Sunday. We had a large, quiet suite. We planned for a five night stay, but the French train strike kept us in London, and our suite was available, so we stayed eight nights. A big shout-out to Irene at the front desk who gave us the warmest welcome and took good care of us. Excellent staff all around. Another shout-out to Emmanuel in the Chambers Club, too. This neighborhood rocks, btw. You've got everything here, plus Cornish pasties and Harry Potter at Kings Cross, Google HQs and the restaurants that surround that, and the super cool Coal Drops Yard beyond that. We did a load of laundry across from Mary Shelley's place two blocks away. I ❤️ London. Any issues were minor and this place gets plenty of grace. The shower is piping hot, but the tub, which might sit next to original windows, could not get hot. The jacuzzi in the spa was cold our entire stay. In the Chambers Club, hot food struggled to stay hot. But, y'all, we were in a massive winter storm, and, again, this place gets grace. Oh, and no merch for sale. I would have bought those hand painted cups in our room. And you cannot help but bust into ”Wannabe” on the grand staircase. Enjoy ☮️

Small Luxury Hotels of the World - the Academy

Bloomsbury London|0.81km from Foundling Museum
The photos and website information about The Academy are incredibly deceptive about this boutique hotel. Sounded and looked lovely online and with a middling price of £188.00 per night B&B sounded a good choice for a solo mini trip to London. The reality was incredibly different. The hotel is scruffy and shabby and the loos smell of fish. Sadly, the service was non-existent and not at the level I would expect of a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. I had a single room (which I chose as it was just me) on the ground floor overlooking the courtyard. It as very basic, but adequate and unlike the other reviews, it was quiet (except from the noisy air-con system). The en-suite was tiny, but the shower was reasonably powerful. As many have already mentioned, the room was stiflingly hot, with a small and inadequate air-con unit which struggled with the heat. I can only imagine what it would have been like when we had the 40C heatwave. I struggled to use the remote control device to work the air con and so, at 12.30am in my dressing gown, I went in search of someone to help me. Daniel came into my room and helped me to get the aircon working and it tried its best to cool the room down. By the next day, and with it on 24/7 the room did finally cool down. As someone else has also mentioned the lights from the aircon system lit up the whole room like a disco! The lights outside the room in the corridor also didn't turn off at night and so the room was bathed in a bright white light from outside and red, green and yellow lights from various fuse things in the room. So, once the air-con was working as best as it could, my attention then turned to the lights! I propped open the en-suite door to block out the light from the corridor, and then managed to pin and stuff towels and a spare pillow case over the disco lights to dim the bright glare. As you can imagine, the first night was a bit of a nightmare with not much sleep. Breakfast the next day was good and the staff in The Refectory were the first to greet me with a welcoming smile and were so helpful and attentive. The breakfast (and staff in the Refectory) have saved this review from being the lowest rating of Terrible. I am incredibly disappointed with my two night stay at The Academy and regret staying there. To finish on a positive note, the location was great and easy to walk to all the places that I wanted to walk to. So great location for Soho, Piccadilly, Covent Garden etc, but poor service and a tired and tatty hotel. So, Bloomsbury is super, just choose an alternative hotel.

Goodenough College – University Residence

It's a dorm, so you can wash it cheaply. It was nice to feel like a London student. It was the only European accommodation with a refrigerator. There was no air conditioning again. I don't clean it every day, I don't change my towel. No individual bathroom, no toilet There was no inconvenience because there was a female shower room. It was a holiday, so it was not crowded, and I always took a shower alone. There was a washbasin and mirror in the room, so it was good to wipe or wash your teeth. There is no air conditioner, but anyway, I come out early and go late. It wasn't very hot, but I had a few days of heat. I think it's heating. I think it would be better to come in spring and autumn winter instead of summer. The location is close to the station Russell? It's very close to the square, so the bus goes well.

We enjoyed our stay to the fullest. Great location, caring staff, decently sized rooms, and shouldn't mention their breakfast? It was amazing! Upon checking in, kids received small presents that made our stay even more memorable! Will definitely come back again. P.S. just a small suggestion- try to have buffet options for lunch or dinner, so it will be easier for travellers to enjoy the stay and eat without leaving the hotel especially when the weather is not good.

Location 15 minutes walk from Eurostar station! You have to take your luggage to climb the stairs. The room is very small, the water pressure is very low, and the sound insulation is poor ... It takes 5 pounds to store your luggage.

Excellent located ! Just next to Russell Square Station! 5mins to British Museum....Saves me a lot of time and money going around Covent Garden, China Town, National Gallery! Toilet flush is a bit troubles! If a kettle is provided, I will give 5 star... Anyway I will stay this place again if I go London in Christmas.
