Small Luxury Hotels of the World - the Academy

Bloomsbury London|0.5km from The Horse Hospital
The photos and website information about The Academy are incredibly deceptive about this boutique hotel. Sounded and looked lovely online and with a middling price of £188.00 per night B&B sounded a good choice for a solo mini trip to London. The reality was incredibly different. The hotel is scruffy and shabby and the loos smell of fish. Sadly, the service was non-existent and not at the level I would expect of a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. I had a single room (which I chose as it was just me) on the ground floor overlooking the courtyard. It as very basic, but adequate and unlike the other reviews, it was quiet (except from the noisy air-con system). The en-suite was tiny, but the shower was reasonably powerful. As many have already mentioned, the room was stiflingly hot, with a small and inadequate air-con unit which struggled with the heat. I can only imagine what it would have been like when we had the 40C heatwave. I struggled to use the remote control device to work the air con and so, at 12.30am in my dressing gown, I went in search of someone to help me. Daniel came into my room and helped me to get the aircon working and it tried its best to cool the room down. By the next day, and with it on 24/7 the room did finally cool down. As someone else has also mentioned the lights from the aircon system lit up the whole room like a disco! The lights outside the room in the corridor also didn't turn off at night and so the room was bathed in a bright white light from outside and red, green and yellow lights from various fuse things in the room. So, once the air-con was working as best as it could, my attention then turned to the lights! I propped open the en-suite door to block out the light from the corridor, and then managed to pin and stuff towels and a spare pillow case over the disco lights to dim the bright glare. As you can imagine, the first night was a bit of a nightmare with not much sleep. Breakfast the next day was good and the staff in The Refectory were the first to greet me with a welcoming smile and were so helpful and attentive. The breakfast (and staff in the Refectory) have saved this review from being the lowest rating of Terrible. I am incredibly disappointed with my two night stay at The Academy and regret staying there. To finish on a positive note, the location was great and easy to walk to all the places that I wanted to walk to. So great location for Soho, Piccadilly, Covent Garden etc, but poor service and a tired and tatty hotel. So, Bloomsbury is super, just choose an alternative hotel.

The good and the Bad of it all… Beautiful hotel, great location. Some good staff, some should not work in customer service. SO COLD HAD TO SLEEP IN CLOTHES/COATS. When arrived we had a pull out couch. On the way out for the evening we asked for some blankets for it.Very unpleasant woman at the desk said we would’ve had to ask for that when we booked the room and they didn’t have any. They would’ve had to borrow it from other hotels. Okay. When we came back from our evening it was very cold in the room. It was the end of September about 45°F outside and only air conditioning when we turned on the heat. We thought we were doing something wrong and that eventually it would kick in. At midnight when we were absolutely frozen we called the front desk. A (different) very nice Lady came up and brought us two big blankets. (Hmmm, did she borrow them?) we asked her to check the thermostat to see if we are doing something wrong. When she came in she was surprised how cold it was. She said she’d make a note to have somebody fix the temperature in the morning. I called after 9 AM to make sure somebody would fix it. Another lady answered the phone who is quite rude and said it’s summertime, we don’t have heat yet. I said all The rooms can’t be this cold. She was very rude and she said all the rooms are cold. When I told her that just couldn’t believe people would pay to sleep in a freezing room. She said she could turn off the air conditioning and do something where it could go up to 28 Celsius in the room. (Omg, yes please!) after she did that it was instantly warmer in one of the rooms. We went out for the day and came back and the second room was still freezing. I had to ask for that room to be turned up as well. As I said it was a beautiful hotel. But being treated rudely for asking for basic things like blankets or not being believed when you’re telling them you’re very very cold and they forgot to turn off the air conditioning is completely unacceptable. We asked to speak to the manager the third time we complained and they said he was on vacation for the rest of the month. Oh well.

Staying at Kimpton Fitzroy is really amazing‼ ️Unexpectedly, I booked a hotel designed by Charles Fitzroy Doll, the first-class designer of the Titanic. The whole hotel is classical, magnificent and magnificent, as if living in a Victorian castle. There are only two Lucky George brass sculptures on the second floor in the world, one is in this hotel, and the other is on the Titanic, which is now sleeping peacefully on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean 🌊… The room is small, but also very clean and tidy. The mattress was very comfortable and I had a good night's sleep. Will stay again.

Excellent located ! Just next to Russell Square Station! 5mins to British Museum....Saves me a lot of time and money going around Covent Garden, China Town, National Gallery! Toilet flush is a bit troubles! If a kettle is provided, I will give 5 star... Anyway I will stay this place again if I go London in Christmas.

A fantastic hotel to stay in. It is in a fantastic location, just a 2 minute walk from the nearest subway station. I cannot think of a single bad thing about this place. The staff were all really friendly and accommodating and the rooms were of a good size. Would definitely recommend!

Quick check in and check out, friendly staff. Smaller room than expected, was assigned the top deck which wasn’t pleasant as had to climb up and down and couldn’t sit straight due to low ceiling. Room was extremely stuffy and warm, and door was creaky. Locker was kinda broken and couldn’t be closed fully / locked, wouldn’t slide smoothly and could only drag it across the carpet floor with much difficulty. Thankfully each bed came with its own reading light and power socket. Can only say you get what you pay for, the low price was unbeatable. Suitable for backpackers for a night or two, but not for those with loads of luggage.

We enjoyed our stay to the fullest. Great location, caring staff, decently sized rooms, and shouldn't mention their breakfast? It was amazing! Upon checking in, kids received small presents that made our stay even more memorable! Will definitely come back again. P.S. just a small suggestion- try to have buffet options for lunch or dinner, so it will be easier for travellers to enjoy the stay and eat without leaving the hotel especially when the weather is not good.
