I have been traveling for almost 40 yrs and never came across such a cheap, stingy and exploitative hotel. I paid much less in Vientiane and stayed in Holiday Inn - a top notch hotel. In Sunrise Garden, I paid significantly more and I was served my welcome drink (fruit juice) in a coffee mug! A laundry offer 30000 Kip ($1.5)/kg, welcomes you at reception. The hotel owner does not care to provide uniform to its staff, they all are floating around in shabby clothes, creating a depressing environment. The hotel makes sure, guests do not demand much, since none of the staff speak English (except one with broken), so communication about any issue is impossible.
No glasses are provided in the rooms, you are supposed to drink water from tea mugs. The rooms give a sad and tired look. A single pillow is provided and the mattress quality - less said the better.
Breakfast is a huge disappointment. You may end up sharing your breakfast with mosquitoes from a landscaping moat, running around the breakfast area. The water in that moat is so dirty - if you look at it, you'll leave your breakfast halfway and leave. It seems it has never been cleaned. The breakfast offered is of very poor quality. Items are not labelled - just stinginess everywhere. Very basic - 5 different brands of butter and only 1 choice for tea (green tea ) gives you a feeling if the owner goes around collecting leftovers from other hotels. The funny part was, the hotel provides butter from Vietnam Airlines, see photos attached. We've requested for black tea and got told that they've run out and have to wait till the next order for tea is given.
The poor staff are scared of the owner. They seems to stick to a given script when handling a request or complaint. We've heard them say that if they let the owner know any guest issue/complaints, they fear termination, on account of not being able to handle the issue.
The staff are gentle and courteous but helpless as they can only work with a fixed and very limited provisions
Guests are being charged premium rates in this category of accommodation. What's being offered is woefully lacking in comparison.
It seems like the only benefit the employed locals have is an opportunity to employment and no support from the owners in running the place to match the standard they advertise. By giving this place business you're lining the pockets of the owners and not helping the local economy.
