The Golden Lion Hotel

Great 2-day break. The staff are the best, reception, bar and kitchen. It would be hard to find friendlier people than Maryport folks. My room had a great view of the harbor, and when the sun sets it ends the day on a tranquil note. I didn't hear any police sirens or see any ambulances whiz by. There's no pollution, the sea sharpens your appetite and you can bask all day in the sun. There's a spectacular harbor,and Maryport could easily become the next Marbella on the Solway Firth. I met some great bikers on my first day. If oil is discovered off the Cumbrian cost Marport stands to be a boom town. The Golden Lion has old world charm tempered with a modern bar and restaurant. They make great food, too, so, goodbye diet. There's free parking, free WiFi and the owner, Phillip Cueto has the time to listen to your story. Special mention to Joanne, Mike and Adrian

We headed in to Maryport for our evening meal and discovered most places stopped serving at 8pm. Luckily the GL served until 9pm. Reasonable amount of choices on the menu. We only had mains the lamb Henry, which was a good portion with nice fresh vegetables and vegetation lasagne with garlic bread. Both were ok but nothing outstanding. Wine was good though! Friendly staff. Worth a visit if you’ve been to the other venues during your Maryport stay.

Lovely view of harbour and promenade from third floor room. Lots of stairs, no lift and got very warm as no windows or ventilation. Enjoyed delicious meals especially the tomahawk pork chops. Varied menus for evening meal and breakfast with good portions. Friendly and helpful staff.

Had a really nice afternoon in The Golden Lion today. Took Mam who is in a wheelchair to the Aqurium at Maryport. We parked right outside but decided we should do food before fishes. I've heard really good things about "The Lifeboat". So I thought I know I'm in roughly the right place, I'll just ask someone "Which way to The Lifeboat". I must have asked at least 7 different people the same question and they all directed us in the same direction. Sadly this was to Maryports actual Lifeboat, not the pub. By the time I realised what had happened we'd had a nice wee walk along the harbour but were 20 mins away from where we started and 22 mins from where I'd intended to be in the first place. We did find the Lifeboat. Very nice little place. Staff very accommodating. Sadly because of our little detour, we arrived at the Lifeboat at 15.05. They stop serving at 15.00. Hurray. I asked the staff if they knew of anywhere else that would be serving. "The Golden Lion" someone said, then someone else said "Aye but there's steps to get in" obviously thinking very kindly about Mam in her wheelchair. However I thought. I'm in Maryport with my disabled Mam there's no way I won't be able to find a big burly bloke to just carry Mam and wheelchair up the steps. My bet paid off. I'm pleased that the Lifeboat had stopped serving because otherwise I wouldn't have had the delicious scallops on little slices of black pudding. Or the absolutely mind blowing lamb Henry. Mike the guy that served us, don't know whether he's head waiter, manager possibly even owner was absolutely flawless. Nothing is any trouble whatsoever. Just be careful his hearing is exceptional and he can probably listen to seven conversations at the same time. However when he hears you say to someone else on the table "uh I need another beer" Mike will hear that too and be right with you. The lamb Henry probably the best I've had. The fat on Mams duck was orgasmic, just wish I'd had room for the sticky toffee pudding. Sorry I realise this is a ridiculously long review but Maryport gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. The Lifeboat gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Golden Lion and Mike get ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Thankyou to all for a lovely day😊

I had lunch with family after visiting the Roman museum. We hadn't booked but we needed to on the Sunday lunchtime. But the staff quickly cleared a table for us while we waited. The food was great and plentiful and the staff were friendly. The veg was al dente which didn't suit my aging mother but I had no complaints only compliments.

Been to the golden lion a few times with the grandchildren. The food was OK, but now last week it seems to be getting worse ,gransons, meal looked as tho it had been threw on the plate ,my sandwich wasn't even cut in to nice triangles ,presentation was not good ,my chips were cold as tho they been left on the side . Only one other table was occupied when we were in . I wouldn't like to be there when it's really busy .not sure we will go back any more
