Stayed 5 nights as a couple in early April, on full board package, in a Garden & Mountain View Pool Suite. The location is fantastic; the individual suites are located throughout the hotel's extensive grounds - ours was about 5 mins leisurely walk to the central area (reception, bar, restaurant), and a similar distance from the View Bar. There is a fitness area, a couple of small pools with seating around, in the gardens. The gardens themselves are spectacular. Our Suite was a self-contained villa, with small pool, terrace with sun loungers, table, chairs and comfy chairs, and great view over the gardens. Nice big bed, good sized bathroom, and an outside shower. Only caveat; as part of its environmental credentials, Lakaz Chamarel tries to encourage guests not to use the air con in the suites by withholding the air con controllers unless you specifically ask for them, and charges €5.00 per night. We tried without air con for the 1st night, and then gave in - €5.00 is a small price to pay for a good night's sleep. We ate in the restaurant each night, sticking mainly to the table d'hote menu included in our package, occasionally going off piste to the a la carte menu with supplementary cost. Food was good, not great, but equally nothing to complain about. Wine list was ok too, like others places on Mauritius, wine is relatively expensive. Breakfast was a pretty extensive buffet, catering for most tastes. View Bar is the place to be when the sun goes down. It is located at the top of the site, giving a tremendous view of La Morne, the Black River plain and beyond, and the sun setting almost due West. Well worth staying for a couple of early evening drinks (plus free tapas, nuts etc) and watching the sky changing colour after the sun has long dropped below the horizon, as well as spotting the fruit bats / flying foxes gliding past - really spectacular. The service was faultless, we were made to feel very welcome from the minute we arrived.
