Disappointing stay – Room 303 and poor workmanship
Unfortunately, our stay at Casa Ayris Boutique Hotel was disappointing. The hotel is fairly new, less than one year old, which makes some of the issues we experienced particularly surprising.
We had contacted the hotel via WhatsApp before arrival and advised them we would arrive around 4:00am Saturday. On arrival, while we were paying our transport, my wife struggled to carry her suitcase up the three steps into the entrance. The young receptionist was sitting nearby watching her struggle but did not get up or offer any assistance. He eventually went behind reception and checked us in. This was not the warm welcome or Turkish hospitality we expected.
There was also an issue with our son’s room. We had booked and fully paid through Trip.com for a two-single-bed room. Due to a hotel mistake, we were given a Deluxe Room instead, which was appreciated. However, we were then told he would have to move rooms the following morning. A guest should not have to move because of the hotel’s own booking error, particularly during a two-night stay.
Room 303
Our biggest problem was Room 303.
Immediately, we noticed a strong sewage/drain smell from the bathroom. There appeared to be dampness/leakage around the floor, obvious mould around the silicone and poor finishing. Some wooden areas were already starting to chip. The drainage was also poor, with water collecting on the bathroom floor.
For a hotel less than one year old, the workmanship and finishing were disappointing. The grout, silicone and other finishing details looked rushed and poorly completed.
We reported the smell and bathroom problem the following morning. We were told it would be looked into and some chemical treatment was carried out, but the underlying problem remained and the bathroom still smelled.
We mentioned it again when checking out and were told we should have reported it again earlier. However, we had already reported it. Surely hotel staff should also be able to notice such a strong sewage smell themselves?
In my opinion, Room 303 should not be offered to guests until the source of the problem is properly identified and repaired.
Previous Google reviewers have also mentioned unpleasant smells, which is particularly concerning. If the same issue has already been reported by previous guests, why has it apparently not been properly rectified?
Breakfast
Breakfast was another disappointment. It was very basic and limited. There was no toaster available for guests, although we were told bread could be warmed in the kitchen. There was no omelette/fried egg station and very limited Turkish pastry selection. The breakfast consisted mainly of basic bread, sesame-covered bread and cold items.
Our son’s room was fine, so thankfully the bathroom issue appeared to be specific to Room 303.
Final thoughts
I have travelled for more than 35 years, visiting 70+ countries and over 500 hotels worldwide. My Google reviews have now received more than 6.1 million views. I always try to give hotels feedback face-to-face during my stay before writing a review. My intention is to provide constructive feedback that can help the hotel improve.
That is why it is disappointing to see problems that appear to have been mentioned by previous guests still present.
Casa Ayris has potential, but management needs to take guest feedback seriously and properly investigate the bathroom, drainage, damp and finishing issues rather than simply treating the smell.
I have uploaded photos and videos with this review, including the condition of Room 303, so future guests can see exactly what we experienced.
