Hotel Vasco Da Gama

The hotel is dated for sure (the elevator was out of service for part of our stay) but the facility was clean, the service was great, and the location was great. Their bar's happy hour service and musical performances in the evenings were enjoyable.

This is probably one of the oldest hotels in resort and therefore has an envious position backing onto the beach. There is a good pool, terraces and tennis courts plus outside snack bar to compliment the large restaurant and grand wood panelled bar. However, much of the hotel is rather dated and the rooms are basic and rather noisy.

This was my second stay at the magnificent Vasco da Gama. As a recently retired Architect, I can honestly say this traditional Portuguese hotel is the best in Monte Gordo. The 4 star Dunamar next door looks boring & dull in contrast. Do not be put off by the Vasco da Gama 3 star rating. As this is a Superior hotel. I booked 2 separate rooms on the third floor, land & seaview which had both been modernised. The Land view had a bath with shower overhead & the seaview had a double walk in shower. The beds were very comfortable. Always getting a good nights sleep. There was always a good selection of Portuguese & European foods available on the dining room. We stayed half board. If you love fresh Fish & Sea food? You will love it here. There was nighty live entrainment mostly for people over 50. The best being the weekly Magic show. The hotel staff were always very helpful and could speak perfect English. Anyone staying in this Grand hotel will love the location with direct access to the long soft sandy beach. We had lovely hot sunny weather every day during our stay in the last week on March 2025 . We've already pre-booked to return to this wonderful holiday later in November this year. Top tips, walk to nearby Vila Real and get the ferry over to Spain or catch the local train to Tavira.

Monte Gordo is a nice place, small very quiet if that’s what you’re looking for which we were. Hotel was ok but just ok, the room we got when we arrived was a disgrace, the door onto the balcony didn’t close properly so there was a howling wind noise constantly coming through it. The bathroom was leaking at the urinal & causing a very unpleasant smell, also you couldn’t swing a cat in the room either. No soap in the shower dispenser either. Immediately I asked for a change of room only to told by the unfriendly & unpleasant elderly lady at reception there wasn’t any spare rooms as they were full, which needless to say I definitely didn’t believe her. It was her manner that really got my back as she didn’t care one iota, not even an apology let alone “if you check back in the morning we’ll see what we can do” no, nothing at all which I would expect at any hotel reception. The next day the bathroom flooding & smell was getting a whole lot worse so again I went to reception and the very kind young man sorted us out immediately, the difference from our first room to the new one was night & day it was like moving out of one star room to a five star one. The original room was so outdated, as is most of the hotel, whereas the new room had totally been renovated & revamped. Overall a nice quiet resort but definitely wouldn’t stay at this hotel ever again, even some of the staff in the restaurant were unfriendly. The room review is totally based on the first room only.
